John's Story

August 28, 2011. Am now in Italy on a bicycle ride along the Tuscan Coast. Am working part time M-W-F and on Tuesdays and Thursdays am studying Italian at the University of Colorado in Boulder. (along with my wife) Am happily married to Ami, who studies Italian with me. 10 years ago we decided to "do something different," and decided on studying Italian. It has become my passion aside from my profession as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. I also like to study "in country" and also study German in Germany (most recently in Berlin). Last month I cycled the "Romantische Strasse", the so-called Romantic Road, which is a dedicated cycling trail along the rivers and hills from Frankfurt to Munich. I have 3 children and 3 grandchildren and just got back from spending 2 weeks studying Italian with my 15 year old grandson in Bologna. Have "failed" retirement at least 4 times at present count, as there is a shortage of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. I started out in Pediatrics but found that 80 % or more of the issues were related to psychosocial or developmental issues and went on to specialize in Psychiatry, then Child Psychiatry, which I practiced as Chief of Psychiatry at Beaumont Army Medical Center (BAMC) in E...Expand for more
l Paso during Vietnam (RVN). After active duty I taught at the University of Colorado Health Sciences and am now Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. I am a "has been." I was Chief of Psychiatry at BAMC, then Chief of Behavioral Sciences at The National Jewish Hospital Research Center (NJHRC) , and then Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The Children's Hospital in Denver. Have been Medical Director of Colorado West Regional Mental Health Center off and on since 1968. My last day of work there was June 20, 2011. I was one of two child and adolescent psychiatrists between Denver and Salt Lake City and covered Vail, Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs ( some one has to do it). Now I am doing various consulting positions which leave me time to be cycling and studying Italian in Italy, about 9 times so far this year, 2011. I have been very fortunate all these years and have no regrets. I still play the pipe organ as a Church Organist and play the piano almost every evening. My wife actually "likes" my playing the piano in the evenings, which actually relaxes me. I am very thankful that Muskogee Central High School gave me the start that I needed to get on with my life.
