John's Story

After graduation I worked several jobs around Eugene, at service stations, the ice plant etc. Helped my dad start Willamette Valley Title in Salem and Albany in late 1969. In 1971 I quit and went to work at Deschutes County Title in Bend, and in 1972 I went to work at Title Insurance Company of Oregon in downtown Portland. Within 2 years I became the chief title officer there. In my spare time I set up a title company in St. Helens. In Late 1975 I built a Title Plant in Hood River County, and opened up my own company, Mid-Columbia Title, in February of 1976. Starting from there it was a flurry of activity, setting up offices for others in Enterprise, LaGrande, Baker, Burns in Oregon and Stevenson and Eastsound Washington. In 1984 I sold the company and decided to retire. I always had an interest in Motorcycles, and with retirement decided to complete a project. It took all of 30 days, and it did not take long to realize I was too young to retire. In 1985 I set up a title company for some investors in Juneau Alaska, and when that was done I established Mt. Adams Title in White Salmon Washington in August, I was back working full time, and enjoyed being back doing what I liked to do. In 1986 I purchased Columbia Title Company in The Dalles, and made that my main office In 1988 I bought back my original Hood River office. Its a longer story, but I also owned Skamania County Title in Stevenson, Pacific Title in Seaside, Homestead Title in Pendleton and Hermiston, Harney County title in Burns. In 1992 I was approached by what is now known as Amerititle, a division of JELD-WEN who wanted to buy my company, but I said not really. I thought about it and called them back and ended up selling Homestead Title to them. In 1996 they bought The Dalles and in 1997 they bought Hood River. Except for White Salmon I sold all the other offices to my managers, making it very easy for them to become owners. I continued t...Expand for more
o work half days in my office in White Salmon. in 2001 a key employee left just before I was to leave on a motorcycle ride to New York. That was the end for me it was time to really retire this time. In my available half days I had started restoring vintage motorcycles so I had plenty to do, but with no responsibilities or schedule. 9/11 happened and there were no buyers for a while, but all of a sudden there were 3 companies wanting to buy the office. Amerititle bought me out in April of 2002, and my last day of work was the last day of September 2002. The day before opening up in Hood River in 1976, I met my wife Marilyn. We got married that July. We do our share of travel, and have had quite a few trips to Europe over the years. We particularly like southern Germany and Switzerland. Late last summer we took a nice cruise through the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas on Regent. We plan another trip next spring. In addition I do a lot of motorcycle travel, both on vintage bikes as well as modern. The picture was taken December 12, 2012 after a photo-shoot re-enacting a picture done in 1948 of a furniture designer named Charles Eames. The original picture depicts Charles and his wife Ray, sitting on a 1948 Velocette KSS. The poster is actually still available from Eames gallery through Amazon. A couple who liked the poster wanted to duplicate it , and after a search found that I had 2 1948 KSS's in my collection. I just finished the restoration of the one in the picture.in late November. At the photo shoot, the couple were dressed and posed just like the original poster. Since retirement, I have completed over 50 antique motorcycle restorations. Have sold some, have some on museum loan to the WAAAM Museum in Hood River, and the rest are in the showroom in my shop building. Obviously a very quick overview of what has been going on for the last 45 years. Hope all of you are enjoying life as well!
