John's Story
As with most everyone, highschool was a very mixed time, trying out personnas. trying to fit in, trying to stand out. Looking back now(the retrospectoscope is always in sharp focus) I'm amazed at what I remember and what I'm sure happened but I now can't recall. College, travel, marriage, parenthood, professional life, and now "retirement" all seem much more in the forefront of my life memories of getting to now than highschool. Not that it wasn't important, but that it set the stage for what came after. It is my history and cannot be changed, only emphasized or forgotten. As the Dali Lama said "In everyones' life there are two days where nothing can be accomplished: yesterday and tomorrow."
Brief lifecast. UofM 3years then to PortlandState universityfor a BS and at that time married Carolyn and on to medical school at OHSU. The draft (,you remember?) so onto surgical residency. Finished in 1975 when the US Navy sent us Carolyn, two sons and I to 3 years in Guam. Originally we thought this was a black hole but we loved the tropical paradise, the travel, and the diving. and one of the best confidence builders ever. Thousands of miles from anywhere 3 large military bases, and all of the the Trust Territories to look after surgically--GREAT FUN! The day Brie Anne my daughter was born, a small passenger plane crashed on take-off and 4 Japanese citizens lived with me in the operating room & ICU for ~2 weeks. All 4 as well as Carolyn and Brie Anne got home safely. Surgical practice in priviate life took us to Crescent City, California. Surgery there was all consuming 24/365 with no chance of a partner. I enjoyed about all that I could stand. On to Lewiston Idaho for 22 years with a surgical partner and shared call schedule--seeming paradise after California.
On to 2005 and a move to portland again where all 3 kids had moved, married settled and two reproduced--Henry 10, and Ellie now 6. Carolyn and I built a summer place on Flathead Lake, have a home in Portland, And often travel to Mexico and Central America. What a great, lucky life still with adventure and useful work.
