John's Story
Every time I try to update this I get almost done and this website crashes! So sorry, this is out of date.....
The latest (in 2010) was that my wife and I moved from the Ann Arbor, MI area to Lake Bracken, south of Galesburg, IL, in the past year. So we return at last to Illinois! And our 3rd grandchild, and first granddaughter, was born last week in Peoria, IL.
Hey, how 'bout y'all plan on attending the 50th REUNION in 2012? Sounds like fun?
Other than that, the profile is as before:
I moved from Indianapolis to Arlington Heights in 1954, entering 5th grade with Mr. Nolan as teacher. We lived on South Evergreen at Orchard, near Dick & Doug Hansen and John & Jerry Lind. We later moved a block east to the corner of Orchard & State.
For my sophomore year, I was among those bused to the "new" Prospect HS, returning the next two years to AHS. After graduation in '62, I went to Purdue University (BSME '66), then Indiana U at Bloomington (JD '69). I was admitted to the Indiana Bar in '69 and the Michigan Bar in '80.
After graduating from law school in '69, I spent 10 years working for Indiana University, winding up as Director of the Institute for Research in Public Safety, and a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA).
In June, 1972, on the day of the Watergate break-in, I was married in the IU Chapel to Anne Rodeffer of the LaHarpe, IL area (near Macomb), and here we are, in a blink, 34 years later.
With son Scott, then only 6, Anne and I moved to Ann Arbor in 1979, where I spent two years working for the Highway Safety Research Institute at the University of Michigan. Then, in 1981, I formed a law firm and moved into private practice in Ann Arbor, doing products liability defense work for AMC and Jeep, which continues today with Chrysler as my primary client.
We live on a lake 13 miles outside Ann Arbor (mailing address Dexter, MI), and our son and his wife live less than a half hour away in Howell, MI. A ...Expand for more
glorious event in September 2006 was the birth of our first grandchild, Joshua John. What a blessing he has been to us!
I passed up our 10th class reunion, despite the urging of Ray Voelker that I attend, then didn't hear anything about subsequent reunions until the 40th, which I had planned to attend but cancelled due to a family conflict. But, I'm still hoping to make it to a class reunion one of these days. Maybe the 45th or 50th, God willing.
I turned 62 in August 2006, and am still working, although I need to take the time to think about retirement one of these days. An old hobby, since Purdue, is flying (currently an F-33A Bonanza), and a new one is SCCA Club Racing at sports car courses such as BlackHawk Farms, near Rockford IL, which I am doing with my son. My son placed 1st and I placed 2nd in the SCCA regional championship last year driving Dodge Neons in Showroom Stock C, and this year we have two Spec Racer Fords we are trying to master. I have also recently taken up golf, but am saving bridge and wine tasting for the old folks home. Between them, wine tasting looks easier to master at this point.
In June 2005, Anne and I rode a Honda Goldwing, with a group of friends, from Spokane, WA, down the Oregon and California coasts, winding up in Yosemite Valley and Fresno, 2,600 miles later. In June of this year (2006) we attended a business meeting and vacationed with friends in the Berlin, Germany and Salzburg, Austria areas. A September cruise in Alaska was postponed until next spring, in order to be there when our grandchild Joshua John was born.
When we are not at home on the lake in Dexter, Anne and I spend time, mostly in the winter, at our townhouse on Gasparilla Island, in Boca Grande, FL.
I would love to hear from any of my old AHS classmates. PLAN ON ATTENDING THE 50TH REUNION, IN 2012, OK?
Wishing you all health, happiness, and the enjoyment of each and every day,
John Treat
