After high school, I went to the University of Missouri to study journalism but didn't return after the freshman year. After working for a telephone answering service and some other dead-end jobs, I returned to school, worked summers at salmon canneries in Alaska, and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1969. Tried graduate school, but wasn't cut out to be a librarian, left in the middle of a lecture and joined the Army. My last assignment, before given a medical retirement, was in Germany--where was the first female officer (Captain) to command a combat support unit (lots of stories to tell about those years).
