Johnny's Story
Life
I guess I should start by saying just how lucky I have been on this trip thru life. I have met so many people that were willing to help me along the way, that without this help there is no way to tell where my journey would have me now.
I had just started my senior year at Gordon when I was ask to leave due to getting my girlfriend pregnant. I was lucky that DeKalb County had an adult education system that I attended at night at a Clarkston school that allow me to graduate with a Gordon High diploma. During this time my daughter Melonie was born and Cathy, Melonie and I were doing fine.
In October 1967 I won the lottery, better know as the Military Draft. My choice was two years in the Army or three years in the Marines, I took the Marines. After Boot camp and training I received my orders for Vietnam. Three days before heading to the West Coast for shipping out for Vietnam my order were changed and I ended up in Scotland at the US Navy submarine base for the North Atlantic due to security problems at the base. Some how I guessed lucky on my military IQ test is the reason for the changed orders. Due to the security issues, we were monitoring the Russians, at the base I was unable to come home till my three years were over.
November 1970, it's nice to be home! Cathy and Melonie are doing fine. By December I had enrolled in College at night using the GI Bill. I also started by employment with the Georgia Department of Transportation. For the next ten years I worked at GADOT and attended school at night. In June of 1981 I was graduated from Kennesaw State with a BS degree in Management/Marketing with a minor in math. Because I could not see the big picture, the degree did cost me two marriages. I will always bare the wounds of bad decisions and the good people I let...Expand for more
down. I hope they have forgiven me, as I will always regret the harm I caused. Later Cathy died in an accident, and Melonie moved in with me.
In 1986 I joined a company, Leica Inc., which is based in Switzerland. For the next twenty years I traveled the globe and had a very rewarding time. Being lucky gave me the opportunity to see parts of the world that I would have never seen. Meeting and working with people from across the globe was such a learning experience. Soon after starting with this company I met Pam and for the most part we have been together since.
The darkest winter of my soul happen about seven years ago when my first grandson died in an auto accident. This happen only a few months after while helping him learn how to ride a bicycle, Brandon looked up at me and said " Papa don't let me fall and get hurt". I promised him I would always protect him, a promise I could not keep.
I now have four grandchildren; they are all beautiful and great to be with. The fifth is due in October.
Last year, 2006, I retired and now work harder than I have ever worked before. I will attach some pictures of our winter home on the East Bay, Panama City. Our summer home is on Deer creek Plantation Golf course in South Carolina, you can see the clubhouse, putting green and the practice sand trap. Since retiring I have been able to drop my handicap from 12 to 8. Between seasons we spent time at our rustic pulp wood tree farm outside of Milledgeville, Ga. At retirement I received two gifts, my Jag and my boat the Sea Fox.
What life has in store for me in the future only God knows. I love golf, fishing, hunting, tennis, traveling, and being with family. Outside of a couple of knee surgeries I have never been sick so I look to be around for a while, that's part of being lucky.
