Jonathan's Story

Greetings, all of my former classmates from the Tropical Lands of Honduras. I have been living here for the past 15 years. I love the tropical weather and the beautiful beaches in Honduras. The weather is hot and humid year round. We have two climatic seasons, hot and wet or hot and dry. The temperatures are between 75 and 100 degrees depending on how much sun or rain there is. I retired at age 35 and decided to move to Honduras, where my wife is from. We have two sons, Jonathan, age 26 and Ricardo, age 19. Both of my boys now reside in Orlando, Florida and I spend time with them when I can. I have many family members on my wife's side of the family residing in Florida also. My sister, Nancy, is still living in the Pittsburgh Area with her sons. In case you wanted to know, I did graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and worked for Dravo Corporation, Mellon-Stuart Company, McAnallen Corporation and Culp Paving. Most of these jobs were in the Tri-state area (Ohio, Pennsylvania and West "By God" Virginia) and also in Maryland. I worked as a Surveyor, Project Engineer, Project Manager and "a jack-of-all-trades". I also have obtained various Certifications from the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia (E.I.T. and Quality Control Testing) So after working for 15 years, I became disabled and retired for good. I did manage to teach English to school age children for 5 years about 10 years ago at one of the local American Schools. And one year I even taught Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Earth Sciences along with English and World History. As far as my disability goes, I suffered a virus inside my heart and the electricity of my heart does not work anymore, so I am like the bionic man now and am on my third pacemaker, which should last for another 10 years. Well, now that my sons are no longer living in Honduras, I can take it a little easier by going to the beach, setting up ...Expand for more
a hammock and just lying around and watching the ocean coming, are you jealous yet, and this is in the dead of winter in the US. There is no one on the beaches during January and February because people think it is too cold. It is a cool 75 degrees in the wintertime here. I am sure anyone living in subzero weather would love to come here to the cool weather. LOL Well, I think I have been long winded enough and I did manage to give a very brief history of my life so far. I am now helping my wife with her Store in the center of town. We live in a good size city called El Progreso located in the state of Yoro with a population of about 600,000 people but this is very spread out, kind of like Columbus, Ohio. We have a little two story hacienda of 7000 square feet along with several mango, avocado and sour orange trees. We also have several exotic fruit trees and nut trees, many which grow like weeds here. Almond trees, Guyava trees, banana trees, grapefruit trees, you name it, odds are we have it. I also try to grow Oregano, Basil, Lemon Grass and other spices that come in handy in my cooking. By the way, did I tell you I can also cook. I also try to get into Third World Engineering Projects when I can, or at least I can help brainstorm with the entities involved. This country has so much raw potential and natural resources that it is a surprise no one has really delved into it very much before. I get along with most of the general public here and my Spanish is very good, even thought I have never been trained in it. I always try to keep myself busy doing something. It does not matter what it is just so long as I can keep my mind occupied. Well, I have been long winded enough so I will say good bye, good luck and God Bless. Thank you for your time spent in reading this extremely long dissertation. Be good and don't take any wooden nickels. Sincerely, Jonathan J. Baker, BSCE/EIT/EWVP PS. I am also referred to as Papa Jon by all of the locals here.
