Joe's Story
After Harriman HS 1968-70 (TN), moved to GA and graduated from Wheeler HS 1970-71 (Marietta GA), family moved to Cocoa Florida that summer. Graduated from The Citadel in Charleston SC in 1975, attended on Navy Scholarship (remember it was either sign-up or get drafted back then), completed bachelor degree in Chemistry and Physical Sciences. Commissioned a Navy Officer upon graduation, completed 2 years of Navy Flight School in Pensacola FL, and San Diego CA. Stationed at NAS North Island in Coronado/ San Diego CA, and NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville Florida (Then Capt. and future senator John McCain had been released from his North Vietnam as a POW, was an A-7 Corsair squadron CO there at the time), assigned to carrier squadron duty VS-35 and VS-32 flying Lockheed Viking S-3A in Carrier Air Group One aboard the aircraft carriers USS John F Kennedy and USS Eisenhower based out of Norfolk VA, deployed to the Mediterranean. Greece fighting for control of the island, later that same summer was on a train in Italy when I learned that President Nixon had resigned from office in August of 1974. Deployed back to the Mediterranean again in 1978, carrier was in Alexandria and Cairo Egypt to keep the peace between Egypt and Israel during the Camp David peace accord talks between Sadat, Begin, and Jimmy Carter and eventual signing of the treaty in Oct 1978. Later assigned to the the Philippines, Pacific and Indian Ocean areas supporting the Iranian Hostage rescue efforts 1979-82. Then back to the east coast supporting Nicaragua anti-Sandinista operations 1982-85 resulting in Iran-Contra. Finished last tour of duty on Admiral's Staff as a plans officer stationed in Charleston SC. 1985 worked on the mini-series "North and South" in Charleston SC as a stand-in for Patrick Swayze (watch closely!) Post-Navy, attended graduate school at Mercer University (Law-MBA) in Macon GA. Now living in the North GA Mountains near Lake Lanier and Gainesville GA, working in Environmental and OSHA regulatory compliance.
