Joseph's Story
After high school I went to the University of Maryland for two years and then left in December 1973.
I married for the first time Barbara Jean Goad (also class of ‘71 ) in 1974 and in the same year I began a finance career.
As life sometimes goes, differences arose and it made sense at the time to make a decision to divorce which we did in 1979.
Soon after, I met another young lady name Robin Jeanne Lawlor who was from Babylon New York (Long Island) and we were married in 1980. We had one son Michael James who was born in January 1982.. Michael is married to a beautiful woman named Ryan and they have two gorgeous little girls name Tyler Jean (age 5) and Camryn Joan (age 2). They have had their own landscaping business since 2009 and are doing well what that little family run business They live in Virginia Beach not too far from me.
Unfortunately, as life sometimes goes….. it went again! Robin and I drifted apart and divorced in 1987.
I was fortunate enough to then meet my beautiful bride of now 31 years Rachel Ellen Winstead who is a Norfolk Virginia native. We were married and have one son Matthew Chasen (not necessarily in that order).
Matthew who we call Chase, is married to another gorgeous California girl (believe it or not also named Michael).
So I have a Michael son and a Michael daughter-in-law. Chase and his wife have two sons Odin Gray (age 4) and Sebastian Croix (age 1).
In 1994 Rachel and I adopted a little girl (at birth) named Rachel Julia. At 27 years old now Rach...Expand for more
el has her own beautiful little girl who is three years old named Feyre Mackenzie.
I stayed in the finance business and in 1998 I opened up my own automobile finance company, (named Automotive Services Finance, Inc.).
We have been very fortunate and grew the business successfully. At one point we had over 30 employees and more than 4,000 open customers.
In 2017 we began to downsize, then in September 2019 my son Chase and his wife wanted to get into this line of work.
We had gotten down to just five employees and a little over 600 accounts equating to $4.3 million in Motor vehicle receivables.
In the two years since when we began doing business again, we have almost doubled in size. It is a quite little unique boutique operation with five of the employees being Becka‘s.
My wife and I, Chase and his wife and my daughter Rachel all work at our company along with four other long time employees that are like family who have been with me on average for over 20 years.
I’m having fun again and it really is a joy to have long-time employees and my family working together.
Working with my wife and children gives me purpose.
With all the challenges our country and citizens have had in the last year and a half of this pandemic, I am blessed to have my family and friends and a job I love going to work at every day.
I am 68 years old like many of us ‘71ers but I feel 18 again!
I hope to see many of you next year at our 50th (ish) reunion. Everyone take care and be safe. Joe Becka
