Joseph's Story
After getting kicked out of St. George High School in Evanston (for drugs, haha, I was a "troubled youth") I attended Sullivan for junior and senior year and barely graduated. (Haha, I was still troubled).
After graduation, I replaced the glasses with contacts, hitchhiked to the west coast, explored it and gained a lot of much needed confidence. Returned that September to start at Northeastern in Chicago. Suddenly started getting A's. And then straight A's. I began dating Brenda Shore, one of the hottest women at Northeastern, who'd been our Sullivan class vice president. (Anyone know where she is these days? Please tell me how to get a hold of her or let her know I'm on here!)
Did some more hitchhiking the next summer and discovered the SF Bay Area and Berkeley. In 1969 it was one of the most exciting places anywhere and I determined I was going to go there. Transferred to U.C. Berkeley in junior year.
Got accepted to law school at U.C. Hastings in SF but delayed starting for a year of work and travel with a girlfriend in Europe. Returned from Europe by sailing a 63 ft. sailboat across the Atlantic along with 3 other people.
While in law school, clerked in the Public Defenders office and loved the at...Expand for more
mosphere. Determined that being a PD in Berkeley would be my dream job. It was hard to get hired there so had to start as a prosecutor in So. Cal. much to the amusement of my fellow pot smoking law school friends. Did get my dream job back in Berkeley/Oakland 4 years later and worked my whole career there.
Shawn, my wife of 30+ years, and I both had same-sex hookups/relationships before we got hitched but we were monogamous up until the last few years when I started hooking up with men again and exploring a neglected side of myself. Came out as gay/bi/queer to our whole circle of friends over 2 years ago. Did I loose you there? Haha.
Shawn and I had fertility problems so never had kids but our evolving marriage is going on strong in our comfortable house in the Oakland hills along with our cat, Puffy, and our dog, Olaf.
I try to exercise daily and am determined to stay in as good a shape as I was in my 30's. Gotta look good for Shawn and all the guys. Lol. Still a big traveler with over a million flown miles. All for pleasure. In addition to exploring new cities, love hiking and mountains with multiple visits to the Himalayas, Andes, Alps and of course the wonderful Sierra Nevadas here in California.
