Joseph's Story
Life
This is like a bad high-school writing assignment. It seems like I spent a large amount of time in school; high school; college, the military. Then I went back to school for my teaching certificate and then Graduate school a couple of times. At the age of 40 I got married after having given up hope for the most part. My best friend kept telling me that there was someone for me out there. I now work in a suburban school district teaching social studies. I live about 15-minutes from school and I love my community. I have great in-laws and a super wife. Right now I'm looking forward to the summer, it will be my first summer off in 19-years. Lots of yard and housework to catch up on.
School
School was fun, at least somewhat. In some ways I'd like to return and take the "road less traveled." You can't go back; but if you could -- I'd be less serious about what the future would hold. High school was important but it was the friendships made and how you used the knowledge that was the key.
College
College was something that was expected in my family. I came, studied, didn't always pass everything but that's what you do in college. I majored in Hist...Expand for more
ory and never really thought about what I'd do with the degree. I also got involved in AFROTC which provided an early career. My history degree led to a teaching position.
Workplace
I'm a high school Social Studies teacher. I work at Crestwood High School in Mountain Top, PA. I student taught here in the Mid-80's; then substituted, coached, advised and finally got hired full-time in the fall of 1992. I joined the teacher's union and served as Vice President and I am still the Grievance Chairman and serve on the negotiating committee. It has been rewarding and a big pain in the butt as well. The lessons I learned in high school haven't been transmitted very well to the parents of some of the kids that I currently teach. Ah, the days of high school!
Military
The time I spent doing my job as a DMCCC was a lot of fun and a lot of work. I have fond memories of classes at Vandenberg AFB, CA and the winter storms and summer heat in Grand Forks, ND. Even though the base is now deactivated I'd still like to take a trip back up there and check it all out. It's also nice to know that we never had to lauch our missiles and play out the scenario for World War III.
