Joseph's Story

Life well it's been a pretty interesting life so far...after high school i went to work for my dad in the construction business...he was able to get me into just about any trade union as an apprentice so i tried them all....carpenter..electrictian...plumber...laborer...you name it i did it...it was perfect..work for a while make good money and then have free time to spend it. during the summer of 1970 i was hanging out at my apt. in sayerville. every day a guy would drive into the parking lot in a 69 mgb. after a few weeks i struck up a conversation with him...he had a mail bag over his shoulder and i asked him " what you got in the bag " ?..that statement changed my life forever ! in the bag were kilos of red columbian pot !! he was using one of the apts to do his thing :) we became friends instantly. as the summer "rolled" on i met a friend of his on a "delivery" one afternoon....we arrived at this apt in plainfield, inside music was playing loud...records were stacked all over the place and laying on the couch was a guy smoking a joint on the phone reading off numbers ? i said to myself " what is this guy doing" ..well he was "working" at his job as a record salesman..and as it turend out he was dating a gal from sphs so we had a lot to talk about..music..pot and girls ! that year we went to lots of concerts and had lots of parties..the next summer we took that 69' mg on a cross country tour..from nj to colorodo..then down the continental divide..accross the south west..down to key west and back to n.j..oh my god ! the stories that came from that trip were unbelieveble in the winter of 72' everyone started moving west..my "pot" friend and i insulated a little ford van's walls with kilos of pot and headed to colorodo..the record sales guy took his girlfriend and moved to s.f..we made it safely to colorodo..although i don't know how..i had $500 and a small bag of clothes with me..colorodo was just too cold ...so i headed out to s.f. with a friend who was passing thru ft collins from grand island ne...(we met him on the cross country bash the summer before). he was on his way to join a "new age" group so i tagged along :) that turned out to be a blast !! the folks were number one quality and practiced a good way of life that rubbed off on me..i worked selling magiznes and health insurance door to door..it was fine with me beacuse it had me outside in the beautiful weather..and i did pretty good for myself. mr santoro (the sphs guidance counsler) told my mother that i would make a good salesman and he was right about that :))...i got a job in 1974 with a very successfull jewelery designer in s.f. that wanted to expand her business around the country. so armed with sample cases and an american express card i took off to just about any place that i felt like going..her customers were very high end botiques and museum shops..so i had a great time along the way. on a "business" trip to hawaii i met a gal from seattle..that winter she invited me up to seattle for the 75' holidays..i never went back to s.f. !! as it turned out my friend the record salesman had just relocated to seattle and in early 1976 he offerd me a job... selling records of all things. i stayed in seattle and learned the record business during one of the most amazing times the music industry had ever seen..the first record i sold was "saturday night feaver".. in 1988 polygram records moved me bc to n.y.c. to be the director of national sales..in 1990 i moved to island records in n.y.c. as v.p of sales working with u-2.. and other amazing acts..in 1996 i moved back west to los angeles and have enjoyed continued success in the music business and a wonderfull life in the city of angels. my "record bizz" friend is now a sr vp at universal music group in nyc..our "pot" friend moved to hawaii in the early 80's..imagine that..and became a very famous photographer.."as joe walsh once said "life's been good to me so far"..and i trust it's been good to you too !!!! added 2/17/12 well it's time for a little up date. believe it or not i'm still working in the music business ...at kirtland records / kirtlandrecords.com for the past 7 years... in spite of all the doom and gloom you might have heard about the music bizz over the past few years..i still enjoy it as much as ever and i'm learning new ways of marketing and selling music everyday..how cool is that .!! my auto restoration hobby has continued to grow as has my reputation in the concours show world. i have a car of my own (1964 fiat 1600 s osca) that is being considered for this years pebble beach concours..doesn't get any better than that for a car collector / restorer..keep your fingers crossed they announce the choices in early april..for the august event. i just turned 61..and for all intensive purposes i'm in excellent health....still trim and with a reasonable amount of hair !!! everything works just fine and no need for additives of any kind..mabey an alka seltzer or an advil from time to time but thats about it..so far so good.:) i've been single since early 2010..after a 7 year relationship. ..people change..what can i say. we shared a few gifts between us along the way that we are both very greatfull for..one being a love of animals. we had to split up the family and i ended up with 2 poms and 3 kittys..i love them like crazy..they keep me pretty busy..it's like i'm here to be at their service..it's their house i just get a room..don't mistakenly think it's at all a zoo or messy..i have a great house keeper that makes the place shine..in spite of how messy i can be !!! i met a lovely california born and raised italian gal from palm springs late last year and we a...Expand for more
re really enjoying getting to know each other..it's fun. my brother tom lives not too far from me in venice ca. and my sister jamie ann lives in north carolina..my mom is a still a "snow bird" and lives in canada in the summer and florida in the winter. oh and btw..i never had any children..and was only married once in my early 20's to a girl from iselin by the mame of maureen mazzarelli....being a kid in central jersey in the 60's and 70' was a lot of fun and i'm glad that you all were there to share it with me..however small a part i might have played in your lives..for that i thank you all very much !!! wishing everyone continued health and happpiness..!!! jdm 4/20/15 well it been a while and a few things have changed.. first i'm single again..kris and i parted ways friends a few years back. we split our pets and went our own way. i'm still enjoying my work in the record bizz..still at kirtland records..been 10 years now. the music bizz is changing daily..so it's fun to be in the game..one thing for sure..no matter how much it changes experience is very valuable and i have lots of that. my health is good...not a whole lot to report on that front...had to eliminate caffeine last year..no big deal...helped my blood pressure instantly. my car hobby has kept me really busy..restoring some interesting cars..winning lots of concours events. aside from lack of rain..living in santa monica is great. on the family side of things.. my mom passed away late 2012..at 82. i miss her sweet smile and loving ways...along with her cooking.!!! tom is still living in venice ca. and jamie ann is in raleigh nc. her daughter tori is getting married in oct..looking forward to getting everyone together in orlando. so there ya go..short and sweet.. i hope everyone is healthy and happy.. until we meet again.. i wish you peace and love !! jdm Nov 2017 update The times they are a changing .:) Retired from the music business in 2016 for all intensive purposes. It has reduced itself to iTunes Utube and Spotify. Enough said. I️ enjoyed 40 years of music. It was a lot of fun.!! I have re allocated that time to build my auto restoration business. So I’m busy as ever. Just returned from a 5 week trip to Europe to look for cars .. parts and build new relationships . Of course toured the sights along the way . Covered 3700 miles in 33 days . Lots of good people .. great food and amazing things to see. My health is still good..had a problem with my ear that required surgery.. it better but far from perfect..! Still have a reasonable amount of hair and only a few pinned heavier than when last updated. The trip to Italy didn’t help.. I’ll work on that leading up to our 50th reunion in 2918. My brother Tom is well and living in Vegas.. my sister Jamie moved to Orlando to be closer to her daughter Tori. I’m Still living in Santa Monica....down to one young kitty.. Mr Louie. He’s a short hair Persian..such a dolly ..!! I’ll up date my photos ASAP . I look forward to seeing you all in So Plfd in 2018. Until then be healthy and happy ..! With Love and Respect to All. Joseph 6/1/22 Does time fly...it's been 5 years since i've posted an up date. Important news is that My Dear Brother Tom passed away on new years ever 2018. He was unable to fend off an infection. His immune system was compromised from chemo therapy he had a few years earlier. He and i were very close and i miss him dearly. My restoration bizz has grown nicely. I have enjoyed a lot of success with all different kinds of cars. Porsches..Ferrari..Mustangs...Masaratti's...and Lamborghini's to name a few. I'm still living in Santa Monica. Nothing much to complain about ..! Still single and dating for fun. The covid didn't slow me down..glad to say so far i've avoided getting sick. But ya never know with this stuff. I hope i can cobble together a trip to Europe in Oct / Nov. .. we'll see how it goes...i'm really busy working on a Lamborghini (actually 2) for next years 60th anniversary..in the perfect world one will be invited to the Concours Villa Deste' on Lake Cuomo Italy next May. So i might have to put off my travels until then. Well that's about it for now. Hope All Is Well with Everyone reading this.. Until We Meet Again.. With Much Love And Respect. JD PS.. Mr Louie says HI !!! 12/03/23 Update 23 was a mixed bag for sure. I'll turn 73 on the 16th of Dec. part of the year i was down with some UT issues. It really took it's time to heal. like 6 months. I'm feeling much better now. All thru out my illness i continued to work on my major restoration projects. We had our first invitation to Pebble Beach this year. A 1966 Lamborghini 400 GT. That was quite the accomplishment / honor. I wish my dad had been around to see it happen. I first went to Pebble in 85' with him and got the bug. I never imagined i would have a car i restored on the lawn. I was able to make a trip to Europe for a month late Oct till Late Nov. Drove 2800 miles. Visited Italy / France / Monaco / Germany. Lots of car stuff / touring and great food. Came back and spent 9 days in Seattle getting adjusted to the time change before going back to Santa Monica and work ! The Holidays will be like usual...quiet time to take a break..see some friends...mabey a little local travel to La Jolla or Seattle. i have. a ton of work in my shop. All fun projects. Another one of my Lamborghinis was invited to Pebble Beach August 24' so i'm very focused on gettin that project done on time. Lots of detail work to do to finish. a full ground up Resto. I think i have it on schedule. fingers crossed. Wishing all my So Plfd friends Health Happiness and Perfect Self Expression !! Until we meet again.. Love JD
