Joseph's Story
Life
I hate to steal the cliche, but "What a long strange trip its been." I've had two moments that have greatly influenced the way I live my life. The first had to do with an illness that had me in a hospital bed overlooking a cemetary. It hit me at that moment at the ripe old age of 22 that life was too short to be angry all the time. I immediately began to see things from a completely different prospective. I have ever since seen the glass as half full. Those of you who remember me from High School probably have a hard time believing this, but it is true. My wife swears that I have evolved into one of the most positive people she has ever met. Don't let this be confused with optimistic... I know we all have limitations.
The second was the sudden passing of my younger sister in August 1999. She'd had a wonderful life where she'd travelled extensively, participated on many adventures, and essentially used the time she had on Earth to it's fullest. I took from this that the only things you can take with you when you leave this Earth are your life experiences. I knew right then that I didn't want to be one of those old men sitting in a rocking chair lamenting over missed opportunites and experiences I always wanted to accomplish but never did; due some reason I had manufactured. This is where I came up with the motto "No Excuses and No Regrets."
Too many people never go on that one exotic trip, get that motorcycle or expensive car, or take up an instrument, etc... They always find excuses for reasons not to fulfill their dreams. I've been very lucky. I had the opportunity through photojournalism to travel extensively. When I talk about one of these experiences, I always hear the same responses from the unfortunate victims who asked me about a particular trip.
"I've always wanted to, but I dont have the time", "I could never get away from work for that long" or " I wish I could afford....". ...Expand for more
YOU WILL have the abilty to make the time or save the money if you make the decision to "Just Do It". No excuses. I say " I'm going to accomplish.... and nothing is going to stop me." Remember that when you settle for less, you often get less than what you'd settled for.
To visit Australia, we decided to go two years in advance. We began saving our money and informed our employers that in two years, we needed to take a month off for this adventure. No supervisor will say "No" to such a request with two years notice. We took this trip and lived adventures that were so incredible, I'll always remember tham as if they happened yesterday. From diving on the Great Barrier Reef and Yongala Wreck, to touring the Sydney Opera House, to an Outback Adventure, to a rainforest excursion, hot air ballooning, white water rafting (Class five rapids), and hand feeding sharks, koalas, and kangaroos. WE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. During the two years planning for this trip, we, like everone else, suffered setbacks and were tempted to back out.
Using this philosophy, I've had the fortune to experiece things I would have only dreamed of.
My point is, you never know when it will be your time to pass. My sister was only 32. Make a list of the top five things you want to accomplish. This could be a trip to Australia, buying a Harley Davidson, earning a masters degree, starting a family, etc.... Then pick the one you feel most important and accept no excuses. Then set a realistic date for when you want to accomplish this. Once you've finished celebrating accomplishing your goal, pick number two on the list and get started. I promise you'll spend your winter years much more fulfilled, happy, and much fewer regrets.
I'm sorry that this turned into a philosophical discussion, but I would rather go over bios while sipping a cold one on the back deck. E-mail me to catch up. I'd love to see many of my classmates again!
