Joseph's Story

Life How to start... After dropping out of CU, I went to work with the phone company, first in Denver, then in Tucson, Phoenix, Seattle and then Littleton. I left Ma Bell as a Design Engineer in 1996 and accepted a 50% pay raise to go to Silicon Valley to become a Customer Services Engineer for Octel, the voice mail company. I left the next year (1997) because the cost of living was 2-3 times that of Colorado at the time (they are very similar now). I accepted a contracting job in Texas (no state taxes) for the same pay in California. I worked for MCI and GTE. One and one-half years later (1998) after my contract expired, I went to work for McLeodUSA in Iowa as a Network Engineer III. It was for less pay, but I accepted that job until I could get back on with US West. I knew that I could retire with US West, take my lump sum buyout and leave with benefits. I went to work for US West in 1999 as a Tactical Planner, prepared to put in 5 years so I could vest my time and retire. Qwest decided to buy US West, so they vested all former employees immediately in January of 2000, so I put in my paperwork to retire in April - serving over 20 years with US West and never working for Qwest. I went to work as a contractor for Telcordia Technologies in New Jersey. Telcordia establishes the computer applications, software, methods, standards and procedures for all the phone companies. I worked on a database called TIRKS for almost four and one-half years until August of 2004, when I was laid off. My family and I moved to San Antonio, Texas to reduce our cost of living about three-fold. It is with all the moves over the years that I started dabblin...Expand for more
g into real estate. We bought a nice house with pool here for $87,500. I put in 3 months on a contract in Seattle (for T-Mobile) and 1 week on a contract here at home and after studying for six weeks and passing the state test, I was a Licensed Real Estate agent in the San Antonio area. Since San Antonio, I've lived in Tempe, AZ, Pleasanton, CA and now in Vancouver, WA. I am currently a Telecom Engineer for BPA (part of the US DOE). About my family: I was married to my first wife for eight years and had three kids from that marriage - Justin, age 27, with 2 kids of his own (Jerrico, age 7 and Trinity, almost 5); Jared, who passed away at age 3; and Miranda, age 23, getting her Masters in Ohio. I have been married to my current wife, Jean, for almost 17 years and have one child - Caela, age 14, going to 5th grade. She loves to swim, play video games, read, play with friends and go to movies with the family. My current interests have changed through the years. I don't party like I did in high school or college and spend a lot of my time working to build my business, computer research and tools, working out, reading, talking to friends, swimming, playing, dining and recreation with the family. We all love to travel and visit the family spots of the country as often as we can. Our next planned trip for summer is a trip to Europe. I just came back from Minneapolis where I was on a 4 month contract for AT&T. My parents have been married since 1955, they redid their 50th anniversary vows in the same church I grew up and served in (St. Patrick's). We have two doxies for my daughter and I'm thinking about getting another German Shepherd.
