Joseph's Story

Life After West High... Attend Iowa State University from 1973 to 1977. I earned a BS in Geology with a minor in Secondary Education. After graduation I worked in Des Moines with Northwestern Bell Telephone Marketing from '78 to '79. I returned to Iowa State for a Master's in Geology from 1979 to 1981. I was hired by Mobil Oil where I started in Dallas, Texas. I've lived in Dallas, Houston, and Midland, TX. I've worked assignments in Argentina, Indonesia, Russia and Kazakhstan. I've done geology field work in the U.S. Rockies, Belize, Kazakhstan, and the British West Indies. I've had my work published in two technical journals and have lectured at a number of universities and professional conferences. While in Midland, I was introduced to Victoria Roush, (originally from Carlsbad, NM) in the vestibule of St. Ann's Church on Dec 28, 1985. We were married Dec 6, 1986 at St. Ann's. Our daughters Marta (2/14/93) and Emma (11/08/94) were born in Midland. We were transfered to Houston in 1995 with Mobil. In 1998, after 17 years, I resigned from Mobil to join Halliburton Energy Services. My last assignment with Halliburton was geological manager for a joint development project in Nizhnevartovsk, Russia (Western Siberia) with the Russian oil company TNK. I worked 28 days in Russia and had 28 days for travel and days home in Houston. The contract was canceled early by the Russians and I returned to Houston and was promptly layed off in 2002. I then joined PetroKazakhstan in 2004 and worked in Kyzylorda, a small city in south-central Kazakhstan. I was the manager for the Reservoir Geology Group and worked closely with petroleum engineers in drilling and producing oil and gas. I worked 35 day in country and had 35 days off. Kazakhstan is a great country with people of emence pride and culture that the old soviet system couldn't put down (aside: if I could I'd horsewhip that jerk 'Borat' for his Kazakh impersonation). Back in Houston, our family activities included dance and piano lessons, swim team, and camping at our favorite Texas state parks where we fish, bike, and bird watch. When I can get away on my own I play golf....kind of. In Midland we moved to piano lessons, recitals, concerts, church functions, meeting boyfriends, prom pictures and just a little golf...even "da girlz" have given golf a shot...Ha! High School Biography:Who remembers? Didn't we have 760 grads? I was just a "Regular Joe" at West. I felt my presence was more like part of the herd; I was part of all that background noise. I did enjoy Spanish Club and some notable people like: Dan Keller, Bruce Roberts, Debbie Groth, Cheryl Laude, Kelly Clausen, Dennis Cassatt, Dan Gogulich, Tony Gomez, Bev Brace, Gary Moore, Barry Ryan, Martha Steele, others include: Craig Hentermeister, Herb Kellher, Gerry O'brien and so many others...maybe I should try to make the 40th reunion... secret crushes...OMG, Jean Flickenger! Dianne Hummel, Linda Hunt...Joni Rose...what did I know? And the list goes on...Class of '73...Kimmy Koegler, Dianne Prust... Sorry if I missed anyone. I keep getting reminders when some people sign my guestbook. I've had some surprises. HEY! Everyone...put in your own picture in Classmates. Face it, we're all 57-58 and that's the best we can do! The notable teachers: Pat Sheehey, Mary Conlan, Dick Armstrong, Jack Hudson, Pat Knopick, Aaron King, Sharon Boyd, Don Jepsen, Don Swim, and notable only because she was so scary: Julie LeGrand (aaahhh!!!!). Remember Janet Moline? Sophomore biology...who taught zoology? The rest are just a blurrrrr...so was I.... I was a "Boy Scout dork." I earned Eagle Scout and I was a summer camp counselor at the Loud Thunder Scout Reservation near Andelusia, Ill. It was a great way to spend 8 weeks each summer during high school. College: Pledged Alpha Sigma Phi with Mark Nordeen and Todd Marolf - WHS '73. Political Science major for a short time. I was thinking law school . The fraternity closely resembled "Animal House." I worked part-time at the ISU Library as a shelver and the evening proctor. As proctor, it was me catching the flasher...waking up the drunks (in a library?) call the campus keystone cops. I had a college sweetheart. She was older and it didn't end well. I even did the classic drunk midnight call when I found out she was getting married. I still wonder how it could have worked out. Remember ISU in the winter? "Little Siberia" and "warm cuts?" There was also the Student Union: the coffee, the Arab corner, the hippie corner, the professional students table, the radical fringe. I really did like the Union. I even kept some office hours there for my lab students while in Grad School. I ended up changing my undergrad major in 1974, baffling the parents. "Why geology?"...why not ?!" I never had shown any tendancies toward rocks in my early years. It was something that just clicked when I took an intro course. Great field trips...nose to the outcrop, beer in one hand, a rock hammer in the other. I changed major and never looked back. My fraternity was big into intramurals: swimming, hockey, water polo, and favorite; coed water polo (wet fun with girls and inner tubes!). Afterwards? Beer at Dugan's Deli. A geology degree at ISU included summer geology field camp in 1975. 8 weeks of rocks and beer in Wyoming. A fantastic ex...Expand for more
perience that convinced me I had made the right choice. 12 credits of "A." Graduated 1977 and there no jobs for BS geologists in oil. The industry wanted MS or better. There wasn't much money for grad school so I ended up in Des Moines working for Ma Bell. From rock jock to salesman! That didn't last too long. I saved my money and in 2 years I was back to student poverty for two years of graduate work and ended up doing field work in Wyoming. I hired on with Mobil Oil in Dallas in July of 1981. I was with Mobil for 17-years. I then went to work for Halliburton; 2-years in the US and 2-years in Russia (28 days in-country 28 off). Then PetroKazakhstan (35-in and 35 off). Then a short stint with Chevron in Midland and a major life event and short career change! Unemployed through 2008, I interviewed with 27 companies yet couldn't make the final cut. So I decided to change careers and go into teaching middle school science. Major life change! Well, the teaching has gone down the tubes! I ended up in a rehablitation hospital Oct 25th, 2010, after a complete emotional breakdown. Trying to learn how to be a teacher (work assignments, class reviews, teaching plans, home work, grading and coaching) and having 130 students to teach chemistry to was too much. I could not work 70+ hours a week. Actually, I didn't want to work 70-hours. I found out later that the medications I was taking were interacting adversely and I was a bit looney. A month later my head was clear and my thinking and emotions balanced. I just plain felt better. I've had two coronary stents, high blood pressure and cholesterol, hypothyroiditis (T3 and T4 horomones all screwed up), and now major clinical depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Wow! Never expected all this to happen. Viki and I separated the summer of 2009 anticipating a divorce. I'm sure my health and student teaching didn't help the situation. Neither of us really pushed all the legal buttons...she just wanted to move out. I got the girls to stay with me and we lived apart. Avoided bankruptcy and sold the house and rented a townhouse. Viki and I re-united (and it feels so good!) May of 2010. We've decide divorce is out of the question. We really did take our vows seriously. Dec 6, 2011 was our 25th anniversary. Besides recomitting to our marriage we found our old church was less than supportive and we then joined the Anglican Communion of North America (more than just reformed Episcopalians!). I then worked at Lowe's Home Improvement in the tools department for 2011. All the while trying to get back in to the "big game." I did some consulting and oil royalty research. I also worked part-time for a funeral home as an assistant to the director; a "gofer boy" in a suit. Moved a lot of flowers and caskets; drove limos, coaches and flower vans. I also stood around a lot looking somber. I was often invited to receptions afterwards and learned a lot of local Midland history and just a little gossip. It was neat to have blue haired dowagers pat my arm and call me, "Young man..." I'm now back in the "big game" as a petroleum geologist for a small company in Houston. My specialty is West Texas but I work that data from Houston. So, I set-up temp living here and fly back to my girls as often as we can afford. Emma will finish her senior year at Midland High, Class of '13 (Go Dawgs!) and Marta will go to Tarlton State in Stephanville, TX for a geology degree. Viki has had a major career change from teaching (cut-backs...the most ridiculous way to keep from raising taxes!) to retail management...a little less pay and a lot less stress! Just a little advice: don't update Classmates while drinking "Box" wine. More later.....take a look at the pictures. We'll add more! 50 years later! And an update. I got another geologist job in Midland with Kinder Morgan, November of 2012. Marta graduated in '11 from Midland High and went on to Midland College for two years. Emma graduated in '13 and I sent them both up to Iowa State. Marta got her degree in geology in '16 and moved up to St Paul with her boyfriend and future son-in-law Andy Lasch! Emma came home after 2 years to re-think her college goals. I continued on with Kinder Morgan as the geologist for the Yates Field south of Midland near the village of Iraan (pronounced, Ira...Ann, named after Ira and Ann Yates, the rancher that got the discovery well drilled in 1927). Huge field still producing all these years later. By 2020 things were winding down and Kinder Morgan offered all us mature workers an enhanced retirement plan and in November of 2020 I retired from the oil industry. 39 years in and out of the profession. It was good but I was done and looked forward to playing some golf and relaxing. So, Victoria has a few years to go before she can retire and I work part-time at the municipal golf course for the free golf. The triple bypass caught us all off guard but I am recovering well and looking forward to getting back to playing in a couple of months. So, my daughters are healthy and doing well, Victoria has taken great care of me and we look forward to many years together. Maybe we'll move to a warmer part of Texas after she retires in a few years. Emma wants to move back to Houston once she gets her career on track. Maybe we could find a seniors only community there!
