Joseph's Story

Life I am divorced now, but I have two grown children. A daughter who was 41 in February and a son who is 39. I also have 6 grand children rangeing in age from 18 down too 5. Two of them are twin girls who were 8 on their mother's birthday. I am retired now and I do some traveling. I put in twenty years in the military counting eight years active in the Marine Corps from 1958 too 1966, and 12 years in the Army reserve from 1979 too 1991. I was a vol firefighter for the city of Maplewood for 18 years and I was also and E.M.T. In the last 10 years I have had colon cancer three times and it is has been in remission now this last time since 1998. My grandkids are the center of my of world at this point in my life. Right after I got out of the service in 1966 I rodeoed for 7 years. I was a Bull rider but I gave that up when I got older. My bones didn't heal as fast anymore then. I have had several very interesting careers, Rodeo and the military being the first two. I was a newspaper pressman for 6 years for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I also was an over the road trucker for about 10 years. I guess you say I was one of those guys who was always moving when I got bored with something. I have beem married twice and am single at the present time. I live in Oakdale now and I do a lot of Golfing and fishing with my son. I am trying too teach my oldest grand daughter how to country dance which is something else I do a lot. My last job before I got cancer was working for a company called SM&P Utilities. What I did was locate buried utilities and mark them so when people would dig they wouldn't cut the phone or electric lines or the gas mains. But the job took me to Texas every winter and that is where I learned to country dance. So now that has become my main hobby. It seems like a lot has happened in a short amount of time since I left school, but it really has been a lot of years. Time seems to speed up when you get older. But that pretty much covers my life since school. Military I was supposed to graduate from Harding in 59 but I left school in Oct of 58. I joined the Marine Corps On Oct 28th 1958 and I was discharged on Feb 16th 1996. I recived an Honerable discharge dur to medical reasons from being in combat. I had 16 weeks of Boot Camp, the first 12 weeks were in San Deigo. The last 4 weeks were at Camp Pendelton also in Calif. My M.O.S/Military Ocupational speciality. Was infantry rifleman. or as most people call us Grunts. I was attached to 3 ...Expand for more
Battalion 7th marines "I" Company. I stayed with this outfit for about 9 Months. Then in November of 59 I was transfered too 3rd Battalion 5th marines "I" Company. Then in January of 1960 the Regiment went overseas to Okinowa for one year. I retumed to the states in February of 1961 and was transfered to a place called 8th & "I" Barracks in Washington D.C. This was the presidentual honor guard. My duty station at that time was the white house and also the sunset parade drill team in the summer months. I stayed there until October of 1961 when I volentered for Force Recon duty. It is a lot like the Army special forces or the Navy Seals. The reason I did this is because I was going to make a career of the Marines and you make rank a little faster in Recon. I reenlisted october 27th 1962 for another 4 years. By this time I was a corparl and due to make sargent soon. I had also taken some specialty schools by then. A couple of those explosives Tec which is a person who does a lot of differant things with a lot of differant types of explosives. I also was trained to defuse booby traps and types of mines and things. I had also gone through airborne training and had 8 jumps by then. Another school I had gone too was basic NCO school. This is a school that teaches the things you need to know to be a good leader. I was promoted to Sargent E-5 in March of 1963 and I was made a team leader at that time. My first 6 years in the Marines were pretty much uneventful. Just the normal everyday training. But in June of 1964 I was sent to Viet Nam an infantry advisor with a force recon team. I spent 13 months in country the first time. I came back home was sent to 1st Force Recon headquarters at Camp Pendelton where I promply requested to return to Viet Nam. Which I did in August of 1965. I was sent to a place called Da Nang it was up towards the D.M.Z. I was in country about 8 months this time when I was wounded for the first time. I was taken to Japan to a hospital where I recouped and returned to my outfit. I went back home in April of 1966. I returned to Nam for the 3rd time In June of 1966 I finised my tour and went home and was discharged. I had some medical problems from being in Nam and I had trouble getting into the Reserves. I fought with the government until 1979 to get back into the Guard or Reserves. I was finally ok'd to enlist in the Reserves which I did. I served in the Reserves from 1979 until 1990. At which time I retired from the military.
