Joseph's Story
I graduated from Lindenhurst H.S. in 1972 with the intention of pursuing a career in acting. I was married in 1978 and divorced in 2009.
After a short stint in semi-pro acting, I finally realized that I needed to earn a real living, so I went back to school. Following a job as a hospital orderly I went to nursing school, first becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, then a Registered Nurse. I graduated from SUNY Stony Brook in 1980 as a Physician Assistant with a B.S. in Health Science.
In 1985, I received my M.D. from American University of the Caribbean in Montserrat. From 1985 - 1988 I completed my residency in Internal Medicine. I am board-certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and have been practicing Emergency Medicine for 24 years.
I joined the Lindenhurst Fire Department in 1973, first as a member of the Liberty Hose Company and then as a member of the Chemical and Rescue Company where I served as 2nd Lieutenant and then 1st Lieutenant. One year before I would have been Captain of the Rescue Company I left the Department in order to enter medical school. I rejoined the Rescue Company in 1990, serving as Department Physician and again as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant until 1994.
My daughter Christina was born in 1989. She graduated from Hofstra University in 2011 with a B.A....Expand for more
degree. She is now completing her Master's degree in Elementary Education at Hofstra.
In 2000, I was honored to have been inducted into the "Hall of Great Graduates" at Lindenhurst High School, for my tenure as Medical Director of the Suffolk County EMS System, and for my research and publications in the field of medicine.
On September 11, 2001, I lost 2 friends in the FDNY. As a direct result of this, in 2004, at the age of 50, I joined the U.S Army reserve and was commissioned as a Major in the Medical Corps. The following month I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Following surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy, I attended the Army's Officer Basic Course in 2005. In 2006 I spent 3 months in Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division, where I was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
On November 25, 2009 I married my wife Madeline Perez from Santiago, Dominican Republic (thank you LHS for the Espanol!). On November 28, 2009 I was deployed to Camp Taji, Iraq until February of 2010 with the 96th Sustainment Brigaide. In January of 2011 I was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. I am still serving in the Army Reserve.
I still live in Lindenhurst with my wife Madeline, my daughter Christina, 23 and my stepchildren Amy, 16 and Richard, 14.
My hobbies include T'ai Chi, martial arts and Ham Radio.
