Joseph's Story
After graduation I bounced around from job to job trying to earn enough money to buy my first car. I worked at Remo manufacturing in No Ho until I nearly cut off one of my fingers while cutting steel hoops for drums. I moved up to moving inner office mail for Forest Lawn. Yes, it is true they sometimes arrive via the mail. At the beginning of the spring semester '66 I enrolled at Glendale College. My college career was short lived as Uncle Sam called and indicated that the "Marines were looking for a few good men." While in boot camp in San Diego, I learned that a very close personal friend who had taken me under his wing, had been killed during a fishing trip in Mexico. After boot camp, and before I left for Viet Nam, Bob and Vicki Mehal arranged for a gathering of my closest friends to wish me well. I will always remember them for that as well as for the many letters they sent to me. I spent 13 months in the I Corps area in and around the DMZ with the 2nd Bn 9th Marine Regiment.
After my release from active duty, I was hired by the Burbank Police Department. I retired in December of 2000 at the rank of Captain.with nearly 33 years of service I can say that life is great, especially when enjoyed while sipping a good Scotch or a fine Chianti.
