Joseph's Story
After North High, I attended Phoenix College and ASC, and then the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Class of 1960. Larry Spitalny and John Kimball were in the same class. I interned at Good Sam in Phoenix, and then pediatric residency at St. Joseph's in Phoenix and the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver.
Next was two years active duty in the U.S. Army, 1964 and 1965, at Ft. Carson, CO. From Colorado it was directly to Coos Bay, Oregon, where I started medical practice at the Bay Clinic in Jan., 1966. General Pediatrics plus Adult & Pediatric Allergy and Environmental Medicine until Aug., 2003 and limited to Allergy and Environmental Medicine after that. from an enormous bureaucracy resulted in seeing fewer patients and working significantly longer hours while taking home less and less pay. They tell us that a doctor can now expect to spend more than 50% of his professional time on a computer, and that was certainly my experience at the end.
I have two sons, Weston (1963) and Benjamin (1968). Vicki and I have been very happily married since 1985. She has two sons and a daughter, and we have 5 grand children.
Our hobby is antique cars. We have a 1914 Hudson and a 1926 Pierce-Arrow and spend as much time as we can on the road with the Horseless Carriage Club, the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, and the Pierce-Arrow Society. And now that I've retired there is actually time for social life! We have too many roots in Coos Bay to ever think of moving.
We are active in the United Methodist Church.
