Joshua's Story

Military After get kicked out of Kendrick high and seeing that my life was going no where but in the toilet I decided to join the Navy Reserve. In Oct 1988 I left Columbus Ga. for Greatlakes Naval Recruit Training Command. Where I endured 8 weeks of what I, at the time, considered to be hell on earth. I then reported to NCTC Port Heuneme, California to be trained as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Navy's elite construction unit the SEABEEs. Upon graduation I was sent home to my Reserve duties but with a poor job market at home and the fact I was falling back into some of the same ole things I was doing before I left I decided that active duty was the place for me. I reentered active duty in April of 1989 and attended NAVET training in Orlando. I spent 3 glorious months having the time of my life. I was then sent to Gulfport, Ms. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74. I was stationed there from 1989 to 1993 and Deployed to several exciting countries such as Okinawa, Japan; Pohang, Korea; Mushaab, Saudi Arabia (DESSERT SHIELD/STORM); Peurto Rico and Honduras. After a brief flirtation with becoming a civilian again I decided to reenlist and transfer to Williamsburg, Virginia Naval Cargo Handlers Training Battalion (1993-1995). Immediately upon reporting to this command I was deployed to Somalia this I should have viewed as anomen of things to come because of the 27 mo...Expand for more
nths atached to this command I was deployed for 18 of them to fabulous locations such as the afore mentioned Somalia, Egypt, Kenya, Antarctica, Cuba (twice), Haiti, and a return trip to Saudi Arabia. As soon as I arrived home from that last one to Saudi I requested termination of my so called shore duty and returned to Gulfport, Ms to NMCB 133 (1995-1999). I figured at least there if I had to deploy I would know when and where I was going. At this command I established myself as the go to operator During deployments to Rota, Spain; Bosnia (twice) and Fallon, Nv. I was then transfered against my will believe me to be a Navy Recruiter in Chicago, Il (1999-2002)the three worst years of my life bar none. I swear if you wanted to take the rectal temperature of the earth you would stick the thermometer in Chicago. Oh, well I survived and that's about all I have to say about that. I then received orders to Gulfport, Ms. once again to NMCB 1 (2002-2004) I have made a return trip to Okinawa, Japan, Afganistan, Iraq and recently completed a deployment to Palau in the Micronesian islands April 2004. I have now transferred to 20th SEABEE Readiness Group Gulfport Ms.(November 2004), I figured I deserved a little shore duty. This will be my last duty station til retirement unless I advance to Chief Petty Officer then I most assuradly will be sent back to a Battalion. Will keep you posted.
