Josiah's Story
I've always been a bookish kind of guy, so I stayed in school straight through the doctorate. I am a cultural anthropologist, and I teach and do research at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). This year, I was identified as belonging to the top 2% of cited scientists in my field, anthropology, for my career and for the past year. I am now professor and director of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies. As you can imagine, my specialty is borders, in particular the U.S.-Mexico border, and as a result I've learned Spanish and have lived in Mexico & traveled throughout the country. I've written or edited five books and about 150 scientific articles and book chapters, and have won a very important prize in Anthropology, the Curl Essay Prize. ...Expand for more
I also have worked for many years for a more effective and humane immigration policy, and have consulted in Washington, Austin, and El Paso, about alternative border and immigration policies. I love to teach and I am very proud of my teaching, which is both accessible and yet has very high intellectual goals.
I have been married since 1985 to Merlyn DeLuca Heyman, and we are very happy together--two rebel punks now in our rebel middle age (our first date was the Clash at Bonds!). We have one son, Robert, who is most importantly a thoughtful young man with good values and concern for other people. He now works for an immigrant rights organization, Las Americas, here in El Paso. He married in 2021.
