Jouett's Story

Oh my! It has been years since I updated my profile! It is now 2023 and a lot has happened. David and I are still happily married and will celebrate 49 years in August. We both retired from teaching in 2012 and have thoroughly enjoyed retirement. We still live south of Deming, NM. Our son Joshua, now 42, is an attorney and recently hung his own shingle out and is doing quite well. He specializes in water law which is a huge issue, especially in the desert southwest. He married a wonderful woman in 2008 and blessed us with 3 grandchildren. They live an hour away from us so we see them often. Our daughter Barbara , now 40, still lives in San Antonio, Texas. She works in the hospitality business with a brief interlude during Covid at a Credit Union. She is a board certified meeting planner and now works for Accent Destination where she plans conferences and such. Now that tourism has picked up she is very busy. She married a wonderful man in 2018. He is also in hospitality and both have incredibly busy schedules but thoroughly enjoy their jobs. We visit them a couple of times a year . I really like San Antonio but not in the summer! All in all, life is good. We are feeling our age and managing to adapt. Earlier: 2006….Wow! All these years I thought I had a profile and now I see a blank page before me. In a nutshell, I still live in southern New Mexico. The family sold our beloved ranch in 1991. Like so many ranch families, the children and I lived in Deming during the week and went home to the ranch, where my husband David and brother Bill managed the ranch. I had become a certified teacher along the way and was teaching in Deming at the time. David joined us in our little home in Deming. We bought some property with a home not long after and here we are today. David is a wonderful man, we have been married for almost 33 years. He is from Deming, but I never knew him until I met him in the early 70's. I don't think I would have liked him at a younger ...Expand for more
age...he was an arrogant "jock" in high school. We have two children. Josh is 26 and is about to graduate from law school from Texas Tech in Lubbock. Having lived around my father, who said,"the future of agriculture is in water", Josh has pursued a degree with water-law in mind. He has a job with a firm in Las Cruces, some 70 miles from Deming. He did his internship with them and as long as he passes the NM Bar exam in July, he will be gainfully employed. Yayeee! Barbara, our daughter graduated from NMSU with a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management and Tourism. She is 24, lives in San Antonio,TX and works for Marriott at an ERB center, where they book big events for corporations and such. She loves it, but get homesick...especially now that Josh will be closer to home. We all know that homesick feeling ,don't we? Neither child has met Mr/Miss "Right" yet. Consequently, I have no grandchildren or in-laws. I have been teaching in Deming for 20 years. I have 5 more to go before I retire. I am the high school Spanish teacher, believe it or not! I majored in Spanish and minored in Political Science. When I discovered I couldn't do much with that degree I went back to school and became certified in K-12. I taught elementary for 14 years and then they needed a Spanish teacher,so I transferred. I enjoy it. I teach Spanish I and II and I still enjoy it, so that is a good thing. But! Retirement is looking so attractive these days. I could retire, but the pension would be bleak. David ultimately ended up at the High School Alternative School. Lucky us, we teach in the same complex. He is the Math and History teacher for students who need alternative schedules. Young mothers (Deming is #1 in the nation for unwed moms), students who work or have other conflicts. The success rate at the Alternative school is awesome. David plans to work for 5 more years as well. Time will tell. Well, that's my current profile. I could ramble on, but I think I've finally said enough.
