Joy's Story
Life
After high school, I graduated Michigan State University with a BA in Elementary Education. I taught school in the inner city in Detroit for 8 years, then moved to Boulder, Colorado. I worked for Taco Bell as a Training Supervisor in the Denver area for 5 years, then married at age 34. I have two sons: Erik, born in Trinidad, Colorado, and Jeremy, born in South Lake Tahoe, CA, I was very active in Cub Scouts for many years, and taught Sunday School for over 40 years. I taught all levels of school: pre-school at a Montessori school in South Lake Tahoe, elementary school in Detroit, 8th grade science in Minden (as a long term sub), and high school math in Colorado. I enjoyed every level, although I think I enjoyed third and fourth grades the most: the children were still very curious, and they were also able to carry on some intelligent discussions. I owned a Kumon Math and Reading (franchise) tutoring business for five years. Then I worked for Bently Nevada (now GE) for over 13 years, as Managing Editor of their magazine, ORBIT, and the...Expand for more
n as a Master Planner after GE acquired the business. I am now retired, and live in Minden, Nevada, with my husband, Shep, who is a retired (though still active) Episcopal priest. I enjoy cooking, gardening, hiking, camping, traveling, reading, and especially playing with the grandchildren. We have traveled quite a bit since we retired, and have visited St. Petersburg, Russia, several times (our youngest son lived there with his family, and they have now returned to the USA.).
I am also interested in protecting the environment from further damage, and support many environmental organizations, as well as organizations that help people. I am advocating for a reduced use of plastic, have composted for many years, and try to live as simply as possible to protect our fragile planet. Here's hoping that many of you are doing the same.
My email account is joy.m.curtis at gmail if you wish to contact me directly. Hope all of you are doing well and aging gracefully.
It was fun to see some of you at the 55th class reunion in Agoura. Keep in touch.
