Joy's Story

Life I am now Joy Washington. I have 3 children and 1 stepchild. I have been married for 21yrs. After high school I started working for the IRS. After doing that for 7yrs I decided to become a stay at home mom and have a couple of kids. That was boring so I started a daycare business in my home so I and my kids can have some company. But after five years I got tired of staying in the home with only toddlers for company. So, now I work as a Sr. Admin Asst for a printer company. I have been with the company for 10yrs and now I want to be back home to help my two teens with the terrible teen yrs. I am also in the process of starting my own computer training school to help those making minimum wage acquire skills to boost their income level. Will update at anothertime School While in Cassidy elementary school I was crazy about a guy named Craig Carter. We were so in puppy love. Ms. Bernadino was the best. While at Beeber I was an honer student. I tried out just about everything. It was a great time. I started in 76 which was our independance year, so we had a lot of things with our year on it. That was great. Ms. Kravitz let me be teacher for a day. Those were good times. While I was at King I was a good student. I started looking for love in all the wrong places and produced a son in my senior year. I never missed a day. Most of the girls who were pregnant, dropped out but not me. I still walked down the aisle graduation day. My son was only 11 days old. Although many people talked about me with my belly walking the halls, there were some great teachers and faculty who stood behind me because so many girls dropped out in shame from conceiving. But I believe shame should not enter in the miracle of birth. I am a better person for that. My son grew up with pride and determination to not le...Expand for more
t anything stop him from reaching his goals. He his now married with a wife of his own living in OK totally independant. He grew up a wonderful young african american male with no run ins with the law. No drug use. Graduated on time. So I can say we broke a belief that all teenage moms won't make it and their offspring won't either. There was no generational repeat of teenage parenthood for him. I think because I went to King and they emphasized his legacy, having no shame in mistakes you make in life, helped me succeed as an adult and a young parent. College I didn't attend college until I was 29 years old. I went to work right after high school, got married and started expanding my family. I went back to school after having my last child and received a Associate Degree in Early Educaton and Human Resources. I transfered to Rowan but didn't finish my Bachelors. Hopefully I will go back one day and finish but once I started making a good salary it was hard to go back. I work 10 hour days and with a house, husband, kids, pets, church and myself to take care of, I am looking for the time. Workplace After graduating high school I went to work for the IRS. I worked there for five years. I then worked for MCI Corp. as a Office Manager for their trouble shooting dept. After working there for four years I decided to take off to expand my family. I opened up a home daycare that was very successful but after five years I got tired of having only the babies for company. I went back into the corporate world. I am now a Sr. Sales Admin. for a prominent printer company in South Jersey where I have been since 1997. I am also in the process of opening a Computer Skills Training School. After its gets on its feet I will be retiring from the corporate world to teach computer skills full time. Pray for me.
