Joyce's Story
My first job at age 15 was working at Whitsett's Shop in Blytheville, Arkansas which was located next to Ritz Theater. I made $5 a day doing alterations. What I remember most about it is I couldn't afford the clothes I was working on, much less pay for them if I messed them up! I also worked as a cashier at Sterlings and Safeway.
After graduating from BHS, I attended college at UCA in Conway. After a brief interruption in my education, I went back to UCA while working full-time at Singer Co. in Little Rock. I graduated from UCA in 1974 with a BSE in Home Economics (now called Family & Consumer Science) and an MSE in 1981. My first teaching job was at my alma mater, Blytheville West Junior High and I had the privilege of working with my mentor, Mrs. Virginia Robinson who was still teaching at Blytheville High School.
I met the love of my life when I enrolled in his karate class. We married in 1976 and lived in Jonesboro. I taught at Blytheville for one more year and then got a job at Stanford High School which was closer to Jonesboro. Danny & I hav...Expand for more
e two wonderful children. Stacy is a sixth grade teacher at a private Christian school in Huntsville, AL. and she & Andy have an amazing son & daughter and a "bonus" son who came to live with them when he was a freshman. Our son Cory and his wife Amanda live in Winchester, TN and they have three beautiful girls. Cory is a dentist and after battling APL leukemia, he now is focused on teaching and development in the field of digital dentistry speaking in the US and abroad.
I retired from Nettleton High School three after a 28 year career in teaching. Danny graduated from ASU and owned his own business in Jonesboro. He is retired now, and we enjoy traveling to see the kids and grandkids.
After I retired, I volunteered as School Chapter Chairperson of Out of the Dark which is a non-profit organization that works to prevent chemical addiction in Craighead County. Now that we also have a house in Winchester TN, I resigned from that because we are on the road too much!
Life has been good to us in our 42 years of marriage, and we are still having fun!
