Joyce E.'s Story
Story - Following my graduation in 1959 as Salutatorian from McKinley Sr. High, I attended and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern University in 1963 with a major in Liberal Arts-History. I then received my Master of Arts degree in History from LSU with honors in 1966. During my graduate tenure at LSU, I taught a course in African-American History.
In 1964, I was employed in the History Department at Southern and remained there until I retired in 1999. I completed further studies at LSU, in the early 1970's, towards the Ph.D in History, but I never wrote my Dissertation, after completing the research in Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City, Ok. So, I'm a person who is called an ABD, "all but dissertation". I also spent a summer at Tulane University.
In 1960, following a whirlwind courtship, I married Earl "Bubba" Wheeler, Jr. and we had one son, Darian Earl Wheeler, who was born in February of l962. We remained together for 3 1/2 years .
After being separated from Earl for several years, in 1966 I met and fell in love with Preston E. Morrison of Scotlandville and after my divorce from Earl , he and I were married in 1972

ge only lasted for a short time and we had no children.
Once more, I fell in love in the 1970's to a wonderful guy, Edward E. Graham, We became engaged in 1977, but the timing just wasn't right. So, we did not get married.
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again". So, in September, 1995 I was reunited with someone from my Senior High School year and in September, 1996 I married him - George McCray, Jr.- who had first proposed to me in 1960. George died on April 14, 2004. . We had 8 1/2 wonderful years together
George raised 4 children with his first wife, the former Ethel M. Saunders of Baton Rouge, one of whom, Debra, predeceased him. Ethel passed away in 1995.
I have 3 granddaughters and I currently reside between Lawrenceville, Georgia and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am currently renovating houses in both places and I'm very anxious to finish these jobs so I can get some rest! (2005-2009).
