Joyce's Story

One fortuitous night in 1990, I was invited by my( still ) BFF Gail Stevens (FNHS '71) to her 20th class reunion. Gail's husband was both happy and grateful to bow out and let me go as her date that night. Along with having a really great time and meeting up with a huge chunk of my old neighborhood, many church friends and our younger classmates, I met up with one of my high school, walking-home-from school buddies, Bruce Firth. Ten weeks later, we were married and beginning a 20 year honeymoon living a military life at the Coast Guard Air Station in New Jersey. In 2001 Bruce retired from our last duty station in Sitka Alaska and we moved "home" to Massachusetts after 30 yrs of active duty and many relocations. On a beautiful summer morning in Aug of '07, and without warning, Bruce suffered a ruptured cardiac aneurysm. The subsequent surgical complications left the love of my life brain damaged, paralyzed and the permanent resident of a nursing facility in Milford, MA. With one beat of his heart our lives changed forever- But our love and commitment to family have not. Together, Bruce and I have the world's most wonderful, loving and supportive family- A son and his family in Hopedale, MA., and daughter and her family in Arizona, and we are grandparents of 4 perfect and active little boys. Our mothers and siblings are all well and most live...Expand for more
in the Framingham/Ashland/Holliston area. Our family grieved our loss every minute of every day; however, we were deeply grateful for Bruce's life and for every additional moment we had with him. He has lead us on an amazing journey where we have learned so much about life, family, love, commitment and hope. Prior to and during my marriage to Bruce, I was a Respiratory Therapist ('75-'81)-turned Art Teacher ('81-'98 )-turned College Art Professor ('99-02). Currently, I monitor Bruce's care, teach, grandparent (The Best Job Ever), learn humility, live gratitude, and rebuild my life one day at a time .***11/2/2010- Bruce has been received into the hands of God. His earthly journey ends, but his legacy of laughter, love, hope and courage will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Bruce lived an amazing and adventurous life. It was an honor and a privilege to have traveled this road with him. He knew every prayer and loving thought that was offered for him. He was touched by the boundless love that was poured out to him during the final chapter of his life. Know that he was/is grateful. And know that he passed on at peace with the life he shared with us all. Please keep me and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve the loss of our Bruce and find our way without his strength and loving presence. Blessings- Joyce
