Joyce's Story
I grew up on Cleveland¿s east side the Eddy Road area, and graduated from Glenville High School. I have two Children who are grown. I went to Vocational School, majoring in computers, I was always very fashion conscious, being influenced by my mother who was a seamstress and quite a clothes horse herself. I worked for the IRS as a computer tech and Administrative Assistant, during that time I became acquainted with people who were running the East Cleveland Festival, at the time it was a very small one day affair. We wanted the newspapers to come and cover it, but when they didn¿t I decided to take some pictures and write an article and to my surprise they published it, I started publicizing that and it grew into writing publicity articles for civic events and interviewing celebrities.
We started having fashion shows, working with the youthful and not so youthful members of the community, since most of them had never modeled, and I had, I put together classes and taught them and put on some very successful and entertaining shows and a lot of the girls went on to bigger and better things. My motto has always been that fashion comes in all sizes, so we would always have big beautiful women as well as petite models in our shows. I formed the Magic Touch Models on my own and was sponsored by the Minority Construction Coalition.
I have worked in civic activities in the Cleveland and East Cleveland areas since 1981. My area of interest and expertise is promotions and entertainment with an emphasis on youth activities. I have worked with the East Cleveland Festival Committee, the Glenville Festival Committee and the Slavic Village Festival Committee. I have enjoyed working on these projects and have helped promote, tea...Expand for more
ch and publicize these events
Helping to create and bring about the East Cleveland Idol contest was a satisfying venture. I have been published in the East Cleveland Community News, The Reporter, The Call and Post and The Plain Dealer. I had a Weekly Column for a while with The Reporter out of Akron, it was an entertainment column. With promotional stories and interviews with various celebrities. Some of the Celebrities I had the honor of interviewing were Lawanda Page, Aunt Ester of Sanford and Son, The Whispers, Rudy Ray Moore, Luther Vandross,, The Deele, with Baby Face and many others, I have continued over the years to work with several civic organizations, Docman Entertainment (networking, Toy drives, etc), Undercover Records (talent scout), and my ongoing association with the festival committees.
I formed Memorable Occasions Video Taping and Editing, We became the House Videographers for the Aragon Ballroom and they regularly had live singers and comedians perform.(We actually got the opportunity to film a live performance of LaWanda Page performing her comedic act, and interesting enough while filming Rudy Ray came and tried to stop me, it turns out he felt he had been ripped off before and did not want to be filmed (he was on the same bill) I had to explain to him quickly that Ms Page had agreed to be filmed, and hurry and try not to lose too much of the act.) along with my husband, which eventually turned into Hairston Technology, the company encompasses publicity, video taping, and my spouses¿ expertise, HVAC(Heating ¿Venting and Air Conditioning).
I am now a Board Member of the Cleveland Entertainment Coalition (CEC), and with them I am continuing my love of working with the talented youth of the community.
