Joyce Greer:
CLASS OF 1967

Joyce's Story
I wasn't in one of the popular crowds in high-school, but that was ok because I still had a group of good friends. Susan Smith, Martha Louise Campbell, Janet Rorex, Pat Albertson, Cecil Blankenship (class of '66), Gordon Finch and others.
After graduation I wasn't one of the lucky ones who was headed off for college - I was headed off for a full-time job. But in the Spring of 1968 I took a course in IBM Keypunch (what an old term for data entry) and lucked into a full-time position at Moore's Building Supplies Corporate Offices - we were located on Franklin Road right next door to Burger King. Fortunately I was able to move up quickly and shortly became the Supervisor of the second shift Data Entry department. After our company was bought out by a larger company in Boston, MA I worked there for several months training their employees on our computer system and then returned to Roanoke.
I married the boy-next-door in 1971 and luckily I am still married to the same wonder guy - Roy Greer. No, you don't know him, he was from down in Wythe County and moved in with his sister, who lived next door to my parents. So I really did marry the boy-next-door. We have three great children, Michael, Matthew and Megan, who all live in the Roanoke area. I have one genuis grandson, Brody who is almost 6 years old and of course puts the sparkle in my life as a grandmother.
I work for Old Dominion University as their Distance Learning Assistant Site Director on the campus of Virginia Western Community College. I have been employed at ODU since 1996 when I finally completed an Associates Degree. I love my job and I am currently working to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Professional Writing at ODU. Never too late to get an education! My goal is to complete my degree by the time I retire, which will be in about 3 more years.

shell. My life has had it's ups and downs, as I am sure everyone can relate, but for the most part, it has been extremely happy and fulfilling. I am lucky to have three wonderful children, one adorable grandson and a husband that can still tolerate me - I have my health issues that come with age, but nothing that keeps me from going when I want to go.
To me my years in high school were years I spent getting to where I really wanted to be - which at that time was OUT of high school. While I have few outstanding memories of high school, at least I don't have any horrible ones to haunt me. If I helped create any good memories for anyone while we were together at PHHS - you're very welcome, I'm glad to have been of assistance. If any of my actions created a horrible memory, please accept my sincere apology for my actions. I was young and stupid is the best explanation I can give. I truly can't remember not liking anyone enough to have deliberately done anything offensive, but the memory gets selective as you get older.
Maybe I was the only one who lost touch with my crowd when I graduated, but unfortunately high school relationships are hard to maintain after graduation - no matter what the television shows potray. You grow up and move on - it's just the normal cycle of life. I have found that the friends I made after graduating to be the ones that have become the most enduring and memorial, perhaps because they are based on shared life experiences, not just shared misery in the classroom.
I know we have lost a few from our class roster along the way, so maybe we can each raise a glass and toast them and a prayer for their families.
Well, since I am beginning to ramble and rant, I have obviously said all I needed or wanted to say and will shut up for now. I hope everyone in the class of '67 is well, successful and most of all, happy.
