Joyce's Story

Life Well where do I start? After graduating from GHHS, I went to LAVC. I graduated as a RN. I moved to Ventura to start working as a nurse. On Oct 20, 1973 I marrried Ron Miedecke in order to be in Idaho for opening of deer season and a few pheasants. It was lots of fun trying to climb up shale mountains. (2 steps up, 1 step down) And we were so quiet sneaking up on those nonsuspecting deer. And it was so warm in the uninsulated trailer we had rented that our tooth brushes were frozen in the morning. We also fished for trout along the banks of the Salmon River which really was fun. In 1976 & 77 we went elk hunting in Montana. I was the first woman in their hunting camp and the guys didn't exactly know what to do with me. Now that was cold! We had a small tent with a small wood burning stove that we started with gasoline. In the morning, the gasoline was slush and wouldn't even pour. I didn't thaw out until I got off the mountain. But it was beautiful and exciting. We drove back 10 miles and then rode horseback 10 more miles to get to camp. You had to be prepared to jump off the horse in your 20 layers of clothes that kept you from hardly moving as the horse would slide down the trail and then try it's best to keep it's footing going up the trail again. Like I said "exciting". At least the elk meat was the best I've ever tasted. In 1978, I moved to Helena, MT and got divorced. Ron decided to go back to warm country (CA). I had my first child, Mindy, in Livingston, MT. They had to find a RN to open the OB section in order for her to be delivered. Then we moved to VA where Greg worked on building Naval Housing. Next year, we moved to Chula Vista, CA to build the Otay Mesa border crossing. Mike was born there. Guess I should mention that Greg Stultz and I got married. From there we moved to Las Vegas when Mike was 2 weeks old. This was the toughest job Greg had. He helped build the Wet 'N Wild Waterslide Park. He wore shorts and a hard hat to work. They made him test the beer, hot dogs, ice cream and of course all the slides to make sure everything was in working condition for the opening. From there he went to Juneau, AK for "2-3 weeks" to build university housing (very fancy). The kids and I went to live with my parents in Napa,CA. My sister and her 2 girls also moved in due to divorce so we all got to know each other and it was a fun time. The kids and I finally went to Juneau. It rained every day. Thank heavens for McDs play area. I caught the largest salmon. It was longer than my 2 year old was tall. The hotel cooked it and we shared it with the other workers' families. Then we ended up in Kirkland,WA for 6 years. I kept busy with co-op preschool and then volunteering in the school. Then our "baby" Michelle was born. Her godmother and namesake is Michelle Powell - the only one in our class that has remained a close friend. Greg worked on the I-90 project across Mercer Island and Lake Washington. Then on to Puyallup,WA to build Boeing's robotics plant for 777. It was 2 of the best years we had. Our neighborhood was so close and we had BBQs, went to ballet, baseball games, planted trees. It was just a fun place where all our kids got along. Really miss that. Then we moved to Idaho Falls, ID in 1993 where Greg has been working for the Idaho National Lab on nuclear waste disposal. I tried working at hemodialysis unit, but there was too much heavy lifting and I ended up having a cervical fusion of my neck. I love the job I have now. I work as a Home IV RN for a pharmacy. I actually get to be a RN! Unfortunately I am disabled currently due to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and Breast Cancer. But I'll be damed if I let that stop me! I have 1 more chemo treatment, and then they get to put me together again after Michelle graduates in May. And yes, I'll be a little bigger! Mindy is a single Mom working, going to school to be a RN; Mike is in USAF,working as assistant crew chief for F-22. He deploys to Iraq in May. College When I was in high school, I volunteered as a Candy Striper for Kaiser Hospital. Besides delivering flowers and mail and making beds, I also worked in the Medical Records department. That sparked an interest in becoming a Medical Records Librarian. Michelle Powell and I decided to go to LAVC. On the way back from registering, I got a flat tire. I pulled into a parking lot in front of a restaurant thinking maybe someone would help us. A friendly policeman drove by and waved at us. Well, we fgured we weren't going to get any help and we better try to figure this tire changing thing out. So I opened the trunk only to find out that neither of us could reach the jack or tire iron. Remember those really short dresses we used to wear? Well that's what we were wearing. What else could I do? I climbed into the trunk and retrieved the tire iron and jack. I'm sure the restaurant customers had quite a show. Then we decided to call my Dad as we had no idea what to do. He came and watched us as he instructed us how to change a tire. After about 1 1/2 years at LAVC, I finally decided I wanted to become a RN. I graduated in 1971, moved to Ventura, and started working for St John's Hospital in Oxnard. I haven't attended...Expand for more
any other college. I have had special training for Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, PICC line insertions, and CVC (Central Venous Catheter) line care. I have never regretted it. I love being a a nurse! Workplace My first job was at Zody's (like Kmart). I was a terrible cashier. I trusted people too much. How was I to know that some one would actually steal a $200 telephone by hiding it in their cart? So I was transferred to a ticket gal. I would collect sales tickets and sort them for the day shift to add up the sales for the day. Really a fun job?! Once I decided to become a RN, it was suggested that perhaps I should get a job in the medical field. So I worked at Van Nuys Community Hospital mostly in the lab doing EKGs and billing along with filing in main office and working medical records department. After graduation in 1971 as a RN, I moved to Ventura after my job interview in which I was told to move up to Ventura as I had a job. So with my life savings in hand, I rented an apartment and called Ventura Hospital and was told they would put me on their list! So I went over to St John's Hospital in Oxnard and was hired on the spot. I started as pm charge RN for a 20 bed Urology ward. I learned so much those first weeks. Such as when another nurse comes screaming out of a room that a patient's nephrostomy tube has come out - check it out for yourself before calling the doctor and avoid having to call the doctor back to let him know it was a mistake the tubing just came apart not out. Makes you feel like 2" rather than 5'2". I transferred to the day shift as medication RN after getting married. I worked as Head Nurse while our Head Nurse was out on medical leave. I had an interest in Hemodialysis and was hired in that department. I became Head Nurse and then Supervisor. After about a year, I asked to step down as Supervisor so I could be more involved in direct patient care as Head Nurse. In 1978, I moved to Helena, MT leaving the smog and huge populous behind. I also divorced my husband. He remained in Ventura, Ojai areas. I loved MT and the wildlife and the beautiful mountains. St Peter's Hospital In Helena, MT was quite a change from the 20 station unit I had left. This was a converted patient room which had 3 stations. I did learn to crochet there as we needed 2 nurses there even if there was only 1 patient. The unit did grow and had 5 stations before I left for Newport News,VA with my first born. We were there about a year and then transferred to Chula Vista, CA. Guess I should mention I married Greg Stulz. I worked at Grossmont Hemodialysis until Mike was born and then we moved to Las Vegas when Mike was 2 weeeks old. I decided to stay home and raise the kids and didn't return to work until we moved to Idaho Falls, ID and my baby was in school. Then I made a deal with the dialysis unit here. I couldn't get my ID RN license unless I had 80 hours of work and I couldn't work without a license. So I worked for 80 hours for no pay with the condition that if the supervisor felt I wouldn't work out, I wouldn't have a job. I got the job. There was a lot more heavy lifting of solutions at this unit than other units and I finally had to have a cervical fusion on my neck and was no longer able to work there. Then I got the job that has been my absolute favorite. I work as a Home IV RN. I actually get to be a nurse! I love it. I love the people I work with. I love the patients - even the grumpy ones (sometimes they are my favorite) and I love my boss. Unfortunatley, I am currently on disability due to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and Breast Cancer. I have just 1 more chemo treatment left. I have had surgery. After my daughter graduates, they can start putting me back together again. And yes, I plan on being just a little bit larger - always wanted to be! (Not Anna Nicole!) Then to treat the RA. One of the chemo agents did help my RA and I may have to resort to that. But I'll be damned if any of this is going to stop me! I miss work and my patients and the other staff - I hope I can return to work soon. It won't be soon enough to make it to the reunion - so I hope you all have fun talking and dancing the night away!!! Military I was never in the military and I know absolutely nothing about it - except that I want to thank you to every man and woman who served our country. Your contribution is what makes our country what it is today. I do have a son who is in the USAF as an assistant crew chief for the F-22 Stealth Fighter (Raptor). He is currently stationed at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, FL. He has volunteered for Balad AFB, Iraq in May. He will work on F-15s and helicopters. He is thrilled for the opportunity. I am a VFW and American Legion Auxiliary member. We have greeted each returning soldier with flowers and flags, had parade and then later when they were more acclimated to life back in the US, we had party for them and their families. The community donated over $10,000 so there were gifts for each family and grand prize of cruise. It included banquet and dance and games. We all had a good time. So thanks to all of you who served our country and welcome back from whenever you served. You are appreciated.
