Joyce's Story
Life...
How do you compress the 50+ years since graduation in 1957 into 4000 characters?
Here goes! Married David Amick 1959, lived in CA, Oregon & Idaho. Divorced 1983 and I came back to SD. We were blessed with two children.. daughter Davena & son Mark. Davena and husband Mitch live in Eugene, Or. Their children are of the dog & cat variety (Presents for these guys are a lot less expensive than the human grandchildren!) Mark and wife Cathy live in Redding, CA. Their sons are Joe 21, Tommy 19 and the delight of my life Ryan 12. Plus 2 local "adopted" grandchildren, Courtney 20 attends Pepperdine Collage and Austin, 17 is now in Granite Hills High..
I have been in Real Estate almost exclusively for the past 30+ years. I began my R.E. career as a manager for a couple of the large local developers and then after a few years went into the resale market. Most of this time I was in management as well as selling. Recently I decided to go back to just listing and selling properties for myself. I usually work Monday through Saturday as I like to keep Sundays for Church activities. I have held offices at the local & state levels of the R.E.industry. I have held the position of Director for several years with the California Association of Realtors and served on many state committees there. President of the local Board of Realtors in 2008, and have served on committees at the local level for years.Several years ago year I took a temporary lapse in judgement and agreed to be President of the HOA where I have an investment property .. What was I thinking! After serving as President for 3 years I told them it was time for someone else to handle it!
Baseball...Our family has held 4 field level season tickets for over 30 years... yep, I'm a big Padres fan! However, I will admit there have been some years I lost some interest in who was on first or what was on second..etc.
I enjoy travel both here in the U.S. as well as other countries. One of my favorite trips was to Hawaii in Dec. 2006 when I took my daughter to Waikiki for a week to celebrate her 7th year cancer free. May of 2008 I had to be in Washington DC for National Association of Realtors Board of Directos meeting and I took along my son and grandson Ryan who was 10 yr.at the time. We had a great time seeing all of DC, Mt. Vernon and taking in Williamsburg, VA.I have been there previously and thought Ryan would get a good History lesson. He came away very impressed with our govening process. That ...Expand for more
was a busy year.. trips to Monterey for a week (partly on R.E. business as a State Director) Then on to Sacrmento in June (again on RE business as a State Director.) In July I took a month off. First flew to Fairbanks,Alaska for an inland tour via a glass domned train for a week and then boarded a ship for the usual Alaskan cruise for 2 weeks ending in Vancouver, Canada. I rented a car there and drove down the coast stopping to visit friends and family along the way. Orlando, Florida in Nov. of 2008. I took Austin with me and we spent several days being tourists after I attended the National Association of Realtors Board of Directors meetings. I don't plan on taking any State positions for a while as I need to stay home and make MONEY!
Like many Americans, I am deeply concerned with our economy and the way our government is being run. I am fiscally conservative and believe in smaller government. Since Independants don't get to vote in the primary I am a registered Republican. I believe that "grassroots movements" can make a difference so I am involved with local issues and causes. Yes, I do attend Tea Parties and I am the President of the Foothills Republican Women Federated. Just a couple of our projects are sending packages to our military in Iraq & Afganistan. They like things like little packages of ketsup ?? I guess their MREs' need some help. There is about 100 items on their request list so we try to send enough of each item when we ship off a load.(a brigade is between 200-250 so that's a lot of stuff). Another project is knitting caps for the soldiers & Marines to wear under their helmets. We invite all of the Republican candidates who are running for office to come to our meetings and give us their "game plan" for imporving our towns, counties, state and country.I guess you could call us, Political Activists as we believe in "holding their feet to the fire", which we do by monitoring all of the elected officials who represent our area and sending letters, emails and making phone calls when we think they need reminding who they work for.
I don't turn down a chance to go to the zoo, wild animal park or Sea World. I also like traveling, reading, going to the theatre and sharing time with friends. You rarely see me in a photo as I am usually the one taking the pictures.
I look forward to seeing my school friends at our reunions each Sept. If you are a graduate of SDHS class of 1957 hope to see you there!
Good bye and God Bless us all !
