Joyce's Story

JOYCEANN BELL FAUSONE Hello, everyone. Believe it or not, I managed to stay involved in dance my entire life. Although, not rich or famous, I had the great fortune to always enjoy my job and feel blessed that I had the opportunity to be a small part of many students’ lives over the years. The last five years I had the pleasure of taking 15-20 students to Paris for Dance in Paris/Study Abroad. (Mr. Lowrance got me hooked on travel at 14). I retired from Florida State University last summer. I’m still working on how to relax and enjoy being totally in control of my time. I think I’ve got the hang of it but, ideally, I would love to keep my fingers in teaching 2-3 days a week. After graduate school, my husband, Terry Straub, and I moved to south Florida and returned to Tallahassee in 1981. We had two sons – Benjamin and Carter Straub. Carter (32) is working for Big Brothers/Big Sisters here in Tallahassee. Benjamin (35) moved to Philly after college and worked for 10 years and is now in his 3rd year at Penn State majoring in statistics. I like to say I have a late bloomer and a flower child. Only one grandchild at the moment. His name is Amias and he brings such joy to everyone. Both my parents have passed away. My mother died at 85 and Daddy made it to 93! Terry and I divorced after 27 years of marriage. A few years later I found my true soul mate – Rick Fausone. We recently celebrated our 10th Anniversary with an amazing trip to Vancouver and Alaska. I doubt we’ll make that 40 or 50 year anniversary like many of you. Rick accompanied me to Paris each year and gradually became (unofficially) part of the team. He and I are both active walkers and occasional hikers and bikers when he isn’t golfing. Rick’s daughter, Alana, lives on Long Island. She also has a son, Jackson, so technically, we have two grandchildren. We’re looking forward to getting them together one day. Life is good. Below is a short version of a b...Expand for more
io that may be of interest but feel free to skip it. Meanwhile, I look forward to reconnecting with some of you. Joyce JOYCEANN BELL FAUSONE (BIO) A graduate of the University of Georgia with a major in dance education, Joyce moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1974 to attend Florida State University where she received her MFA in Dance under Dr. Nancy Smith Fichter. After spending 8 years in south Florida, Joyce returned to Tallahassee where she served as the Artistic/Administrative Director of the Tallahassee Ballet for over 20 years. Through her leadership the Company grew from a small regional ballet company to a major cultural institution in Tallahassee. During her tenure she enriched the company’s stature, repertory and initiated several community outreach programs including DanceChance, the Ireland Cultural Exchange, and the Special School Performance Series. She choreographed over 35 original works and initiated the Company’s annual concert An Evening of Music and Dance in collaboration with the FSU College of Music. She also produced the Company’s full-length ballets including the Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Coppelia. In 2004 Joyce received the Nancy Smith Award from the Florida Dance Association for Lifetime Achievement in the field of dance before joining the Florida State University dance faculty as the Coordinator of Special Events for the School of Dance and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography. Over the years, her position shifted to special programs and events for the School of Dance including overseeing and mentoring the graduate students teaching in the General Studies Dance Program for non-majors, the annual Suzanne Farrell Young Dancer’s Workshop, the Summer Intensive Dance Workshop and the FSU Study Abroad Program “Dance in Paris”. Joyce retired from the FSU School of Dance last year and is enjoying retirement, grandchildren and traveling.
