Joyce's Story

Married a Farmingdale boy (FHS Class of '68) in 1972, who'd enlisted in the USAF to avoid being drafted. My first marital home was the Myrtle Beach AFB (which is gone now), when MB was still a sleepy little beach town that no one up North had ever heard of. Time went by much too fast there, and too soon "Uncle Sam" sent "orders" for a base in Thailand. I lived on Pattaya Beach, outside Bangkok on the Gulf of Siam, in an unofficial American/European compound while my husband worked on the Utapao AFB supporting the war effort. An experience for sure, I got to explore and travel much, and when I returned to the States a year later I was fluent in Thai. Too bad I hadn't been as successful when taking French at MHS. After Thailand we came stateside to Florida's west coast landing at MacDill AFB, before we eventually returned to Long Island. I had two daughters 22 months apart, and we eventually put down permanent roots in mid-Suffolk County. I became a NYS civil servant and worked in school administration, and my husband launched his own business. The girls grew up, went off to college, married and blessed us with 3 grandchildren. n 2007, and we sold the business in 2016. We've lived in our home over 40 years now, but always still wistful about our time in South Carolina, we decided to go back in 2007 and look around with the idea of purchasing a second home. We found the perfect one on the ocean between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, and we spend half our time there now. Married almost 49 years now, family remains very important to me so I don't see myself ever leaving Long Island completely. One other thing - around the age of 35, I contracted Multiple Sclerosis, or at least that's when it first reared its ugly head. I've never let it define me, and I'm very grateful that my limits are few. Most days are good ones and the ones that aren't - I deal until the "whatever" passes. My life has been good, a happy one, but of course it hasn't been without some tears along the way as well. When I look back I choose to remember those "moments" as adjustments to my attitude and path which led me to where I'm at now. Hard to believe it's been over 50 years since we, the Class of 1969, graduated from Massapequa High School. How lucky we are to be able to say that. Peace!
