Joyce's Story
Hello fellow MPHS grads. Here's my story, as briefly as I can write it.
After leaving MP in 1973, I spent 4 years at SJSU earning a bachelor's degree in journalism. Print journalism isn't the way to get rich, but I had fun at several small East Bay daily newspapers (Martinez, Concord, Livermore, Pleasanton), reporting on education and city government.
In 1981, I married Bob Hall (MP class of 1971) and in 1982, we moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where Bob earned his master's degree in marine geology. We had our first child there (so she has dual citizenship) and returned to the U.S. in 1984.
I went on get a master's in mass communication from Stanford and have continued to work as a journalist and freelance writer/editor s...Expand for more
ince then. Those still in the San Jose area might have seen some of my pieces in Bay Area Parent. Up until last year I an editor at the Reno Gazette-Journal.
We had a second daughter in 1989. Both of our girls were born extremely prematurely, and those events, plus the time in Halifax, have shaped my life more than any others. I homeschooled both girls for several years and was active in the San Jose area homeschool community.
In 2000, we moved to a ranch north of Sparks, Nevada, where we have 2 horses, a dog and 2 cats.
The desert has a strange, stark beauty and it has been a treat to live somewhere with seasons. But, I must admit, I miss the Bay Area in the spring when the trees there are blooming and we're still getting snow.
