Juan's Story
Yeah, that’s me on page 207. Orville Hinkle was my Home Room teacher. We occupied the third floor on the Main Building on Central.
His class was the best two hour period! Period!. See, the car wash was held to support VICA(Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), of which I served as the Vice-president. The class was an Elective called, “Service Station Attendant Class.” Honestly! Would not pass muster today. Check it out!
Anyway, there was no established curriculum for running a Service (never say Gas) Station. They helped each student find a job as a Service Attendant (er, Grease Monkey).

got to carry a gun in a holster during my daily shift. Lot of riff-raff on Rio Grande by I-40 in this days. Mainly Hippie types. After all, it was (or is) Duranes and things can get dicey in the Barrio.

The police took the gun away when they caught me practicing my “quick-draw “ one Saturday morning, with a large mirror used to adjust automobile headlights. Left -handed yet. The policeman told my boss that a 17 year old kid with a gun, who watched too many war movies, lived in Duranes…. what could go wrong??
So, I traded the 22 Magnum in for Mail Carrier Tested, Dog Repellent!
It didn’t do to well on rabid dogs, but it sure did a job on my friends (and adversaries).
Thank you for including me in my trip down Memory Lane.
