Judi Maitland:

CLASS OF 1972
Arlington heights, IL

Judi's Story

HI. I have not been back to Arlington Heights in at least 25-30 years. My family has all migrated back out west from whence I orginally came. I live in a small tourist town famous for winter skiing and snowboarding. Summers are short, but beautiful. Lakes, rivers and streams attract everthing from boaters, fisherman, kayakers, and your basic, "get out the city sunbather." A couple of years ago I was teaching an elementary school reading class and one of my young students shared that she had often visited Chicago's museum "of Science and Interesting." (love that.) (Industry). Turns out that her mom, who I have been aquainted with for several years here graduated from A.H. in 1973. We never knew this about each other, and of course one thing led to another and we found out we were familiar with some of the same people, etc... Her mother still lives there so she returns to Illinois almost every summer. (One of those "small world things.) I probably won't ever make it back to A.H. as I have not kept up with past friends. In fact, I'm not even sure why I am filling this thing out. I arrived in A.H. a newcomer and pretty much graduated still a newcomer. But I loved Chicago, learned a lot about music from my dear friend Bart, lived with Mary's wonderful family my senior year, was an avid Cubs fan, and everything downtown was new, wonderful, exciting- including Old Town, pizza, museums and rockn'roll concerts. ot one of those most favorite times in my life. Not to say I don't have some fond memories, as I do. But it just didn't fit for me, and when I tried too hard to make it fit, I felt phony and uncomfortable. If I could change it? Don't know, and don't care to spend the energy on it. I am now a sinlge-widowed mother with a son in H.S. and a daughter in college. I live in a community where "the village cares about raising all kids." I like to think my kids go through school thinking more outside of the box than I did at their age. That in fact, there is no box. I am neither rich, nor famous, nor have a huge, important career. Simple lifestyle, always on the search for spiritual enlightment, try to be the best person I can, and try not freak out at being in my 50's. I enjoy a continued close relationship with my brother and sisters. (2 of them went to A.H. for awhile.) If anyone reading this remembers me, I'm still short, (maybe even shorter), blond, and gray, now wear bi-focals, and love a good laugh. I've survived somehow or another my major party-girl days, my many treks throughout the country in my beat-up volkswagon, good girl turns hippie status, and have actually lived in the same town for 15 years. Not a fascinating story, but hey--I'm still alive and kickin' with a life full of blessings I am grateful for. May sound pretty hippy-dippy and schmalzy, but true. So to all you past members of my past, have a good day.
