Judith's Story

To anyone interested in what happened to me after graduation – here is the scoop. I attended California State University Long Beach for a year then decided I was sick of studying and entered the workforce and joined the aerospace industry for 5 years. It was a memorable experience. I met astronauts, the Star Trek crew (yes, Captain Kirk and the whole crew) who was doing a filming at our location, and had the honor of having Robert Kennedy visit our site and give a speech just a couple of days before he was assassinated. Vice President Hubert Humphrey also visited and I told my friend who was going to be escorting him that I wanted a memento for my father who had been a Union organizer for years. To my surprise he presented me with a pair of Vice President of the United States cuff links which I gave to my father. I now keep them as a remembrance of my father and that day. I left the aerospace industry and bounced around for a while working “not so glamourous” jobs. I married during that time and had one daughter. ng CSU Fullerton. My husband and I have been married 42 years. After a few years of leisure at home raising my daughter and caring for my parents I returned to the workforce and also returned to CSU Long Beach to complete my education. I graduated with a BS in Vocational Education with a teaching credential and taught Computer Applications to At-Risk high school students for 15 years until I decided to return to private industry working for an information technology company in the executive branch until I retired in 2013. During this time, I had the opportunity work as the assistant to a retired 3-Star general who had been the head of the US Army Human Resources headquarters at the Pentagon. We are forever joined by what happened on 911 which is a story in itself. It is enough to say that the plane that went into the Pentagon struck his former office and killed many of his close friends and staff. The days that followed allowed me to experience the strength of spirit and courage of the US military. Since retiring, I have developed some hobbies: quilting, furniture refinishing, antiquing, beading and the list just keeps growing. Best wishes, Judy Bird Shellman
