Judy's Story
After graduating from high school I went off to Sam Houston State to get away from home and have a good time. Got married after my sophomore year because everyone was doing it (bad idea), got divorced after two years, remarried (really a bad idea) and divorced again after another two years. I guess my motto was; if it doesn't work out within two years get rid of him and start over.
After graduating with a teaching degree and no teaching jobs within a fifty- mile radius I took a job managing a convenience store in Trinity, TX for a grocery chain I worked for during college. Within a year I moved to Lufkin, became a supervisor starting with four stores and ended three years later with nine. It was an interesting time, but way too much time working. But then there wasn't much else to do, not that I was really looking.
I moved back to Houston just before the 10-year reunion and met up with old friends. Lyle and I married a year later. I delivered goods to grocery stores and eventually managed to become the first woman to join the "Boy's" Million Dollar Club for sales. Like they didn't think a woman could do as well as they could!
I eventually took a job at my family's business doing bookkeeping, sorting mail, and even cleaning toilets. Without going into detail everything ended badly; too many dynamic people. I moved on to a cellular telephone company in the mid 80's (new concept) and now am the senior member of the accounting staff for a small oil company. It must be because I am older than everyone else and been there longer (19 years). I am the Mama of the group.
Life for me began at 40 when our daughter was born. In kindergarten Jennifer came home with a sticker on her dress telling us about a rally for Girl Scouts. I was so excited (Lyle is not a camper) and this was an outlet for my love of the outdoors. The troop went all the way through 12th grade and two of the five earned their Gold Award (harder than the Eagle Scout Award for boys). I am still helping girls earn their pre-requisites for the Gold and a trainer for leaders of older girls. This is all very rewarding. Jennifer graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Special Education degree and it was great to see her so excited about classes. Wish I had been this excited about college. Last fall she had her first teaching job and was the Assistant Director of the Texas City Stingerettes drill team. In December she married a classmate from SFA who had joined the Army and has now moved to Germany. Talk about an empty nest!
My daughter and her husband are now back from Germany and we now have a granddaughter (3 years old) and a grandson (almost a year old). Our son-in-law is now out of the Army and is in training to be a Texas State Trooper. Our daughter and two grandkids are living with us until his training is finished this June. Once they know where they will be placed she and the two kids will be moving into their own house. We are hoping it is close to Houston as this Nana has gotten used to having those babies around. She needs her hugs!

king to Oak Village with Peggy Carlton and Dana Burke (Junior High) to see a movie on Saturday mornings. We would always send Dana, being the smallest of the three, to buy the tickets so we could still get in for 50 cents. Imagine a movie for that price today.
Band: So many great ones. Playing cymbals my freshman year with Jack Henry (miss you friend), missing the Dallas trip that same year because there were so many great percussionists, Mr. Schmidt (Carrot Top) telling me years later he was disappointed in me for not trying out for Drum Major (I never thought about it), marching (military) one game and turning at a place we shouldn't be and afterwards seeing Mr. Schmidt's face so red he looked as though he was about to have a stroke. Good thing it didn't happen at contest! Getting the Kidney Bean award for laughing so hard I peed by pants while talking to Glenn Battenfield on the phone on our Dallas competition trip. Playing in the orchestra for the plays my sophomore and junior years. Having so many friends and great times!
Biggest Disappointment: My one chance at fame was to become Band Sweetheart! This was something I would have lobbied for, but Mr. Schmidt decided not to have it that year. Just my luck!
Senior Year: Lots of great times in the play and dancing with Richard Rivera in Unsinkable Molly Brown. I still remember being frightened when he had to throw me over his back while on top of a 4 ft bar and going from one section to the other over an open area. Senior Girls: where are you Karen Stewart?
Favorite Teachers: Martin Fanett, my homeroom teacher for 4 years was always funny and supportive, Beverly Hutchinson for being a little "out there", Frazer Dealy for being a heartthrob, Jimmy Schmidt (Carrot Top) for being the best band director, Bob West for continuing to be a friend, Mary Sanders for getting a 4th year Home Economics class together, Barbara Corkins for making band a part of orchestra, Diane Arning for making class fun, Eloise Ruhe for typing and Jo Ann Webb for setting me on a professional quest in bookkeeping, finally a math that made sense. I am sure there were many others along the way.
Best Part of Schooll: Now getting to be a part of such a broad group as sports, band, Tigerettes, choral, cheerleader, theater, academics, and not so smart ones (me) who gets the rest of us together every five years to revisit old times. The best part is finding missing classmates and getting to talk to a lot of you beforehand about things in your life. Ever decide to attend a reunion, let me know!
Golf Tournament for Current SWHS Seniors: At our 40th reunion a bunch of the guys (and gals) got together and decided to raise scholarship money for current Seniors at SWHS. Now golfers from all years gather together around April, have lunch, talk a lot of "bs", play golf, have dinner, spend our money on Silent Auction items, raise scholarship funds, and in general have a great time.. This tournament is open to all classes and is like attending a "mini" reunion. Google Spring Woods and Golf Classic and come join in the fun as everyone is welcome. Not able to attend? Then help by sending a donation. We hope to see you soon!
