Judy's Story
Written 01/08 and see 10/08 update
To recap: I married Doug in October,1960 after his discharge from the navy. We had our two boys in San Diego, and our daughter in Salt Lake City. I became a hairdresser so that I could work at home. As the kids grew, I continued my education. I became a certified surgical technologist, and then, completed a four year degree to become and RN. The operating room was my area of expertise and I have enjoyed a 30 year career in nursing education and management.
In 1988 I was recruited by the navy to teach operating room nursing in the reserve nurse corps. Since the kids were all grown, I took the opportunity to give something back to my country.
Doug was opposed to my joining the military; fearing my deployment, but because he always supported me and never told me that I couldn't do something if I really wanted to do it, he relented and I became an officer in the naval reserve at the age of 46.
In December,1990, I was activated and deployed to the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, proving him right in his concern.

s truely hell! I learned the hard way that one can never go back to the way things were. Whether it's for two months or two years; the lessons are the same. Those lessons are also pressed on our families. Their suffering is just as painfully real.
Our children have given us eleven terrific grandkids; ranging in age from 5 to 20.

A lot has changed for me in the time since I wrote this profile almost a year ago: I had retired from the VA hospital in 2005 but was asked to return to teach a course in operating room nursing in November of last year; which I was delighted to do. The 12 week course lasted until the 1st of February,2008. I've now written six books, five of them are children's books; three of these received literary awards and most recently, the memoir detailing my experience in the Persian Gulf War;"The Warrior Family." This book touches on the unique struggles facing the military reservist and his or her family. I was honored to have this book win a literary first place in the adult non-fiction category. I have just finished the first in another series for children.
Heartbreakingly, for me; Doug and I are no longer together. After 48 years of marriage he has chosen to be with someone else and our divorce was final in September. I'm getting my life together and will move ahead with interest for what lies ahead.
