Written 01/08 and see 10/08 update To recap: I married Doug in October,1960 after his discharge from the navy. We had our two boys in San Diego,and our daughter in Salt Lake City. I became a hairdresser so that I could work at home. As the kids grew, I continued my education. I became a certified surgical technologist,and then, completed a four year degree to become and RN. The operating room was my area of expertise and I have enjoyed a 30 year career in nursing education and management. In 1988 I was recruited by the navy to teach operating room nursing in the reserve nurse corps. Since the kids were all grown, I took the opportunity to give something back to my country. Doug was opposed to my joining the military; fearing my deployment, but because he always supported me and never told me that I couldn't do something if I really wanted to do it, he relented and I became an officer in the naval reserve at the age of 46. In December,1990, I was activated and deployed to the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, proving him right in his concern. I was sent to serve in a war zone Fleet Hospital outside Al Jabail, Saudi Arabia. I lived in a tent in the sand for 21/2 months and survived.
