Judy's Story
Life
Hear I am, in my home of 21 years, Swarthmore, Pa, which I share with my husband of 26 years, Howard Garfinkel, and three cats. We also share our three kids, Kate, 26, Brian, 23, and Joel, 20. Kate, a HS math teacher, just got married Sept. 2, and lives nearby (for now, she's planning to work on her PhD somewhere on the west coast). Brian graduated from Drexel Univ. in June, is working full-time in Phila. and is also working full-time as an EMT for 8 or so ambulance companies overnight shifts, camps out at our house occasionally when not working (he doesn't have to work that much, he just likes it, he says, can't slow down). Joel is in his 2nd year at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA (50 minutes away), plays lacrosse (was also a soccer player and wrestler in HS, following his grandmother's lead (my mother), who played basketball, and threw javelin and shot put in her day, still doing well at 91! has slowed down to bocce. ...Expand for more
My mother has been living with her baby sister (will be 90 in Nov.) in Toms River, NJ since 1982, will be moving to an active adults community in Concordville, PA, 20 minutes from us, in Nov., with a bocce court, of course! I have been a nurse-midwife since 1982, with a solo-private practice since 1996, in Phila. I will be phasing out my practice in the Spring, not for lack of business, (I have been busier than ever this year), but because of the sad state of maternity care: high malpractice ins., low reimbursement, lack of physician/hosp support for my crazy, demanding, wild women who somehow find me because they are fed up with giant impersonal practices where no one knows them or pays any attention to them. (try to see Ricki Lake's new movie, 'The Business of Being Born') So, I'll see where the wind blows me as a childbirth/womens activist/lactivist. I am looking forward the adventure! Regards to all who visit here! - Judy
