Julian's Story

Hi, Bishopians, I used to live in the middle of Bishop's west "downtown" just across the Catholic Church. I have a lot of memories there, such as wrecks at the 4-way stop intersection; late night attempted robbery of the Gonzalez Grocery, which I was instrumental in making the Driscoll residents from succeeding in stealing any- thing; people walking on their knees from their homes all the way to the church altar to pay for their sins (I think); gang fights in the middle of the night at the same store; and weddings, confirmations, funerals, and the such at the church were witnessed by me from my front porch. As a young man (9 to 11 years old), I was an altar boy at the church. I knew every word and verse of the Latin Mass. I knew when to ring the tingly bells, or when to light the candles, or when to light the incense vessel, or when to ring the big bell beckoning the parishioners to attend Mass, and the such. I loved all of this. When I needed to satisfy my sweet tooth, I would either go to Gonzalez Grocery or next to our property was the Ramirez Grocery Store. Mr. Ramirez would use saw- dust on his floor. This was old-fashioned back then. If I wanted to see a movie, in the theatre which I worked for a summer, I would just walk across the road next to the Gonzalez Grocery and walk in for free. This theatre also belonged to Mr. Samuel Gonzalez. Or, in summertime, if I wanted to purchase a cottonpicking sack, I would go (again) across to the right side of the Gonzalez Groc...Expand for more
ery and buy my 16-foot cottonpicking sack at Mr. Gonzalez Dry Goods Store. Or, if I decided I wanted a snowcone, I would go next door to Eustorgio's Mini-Grocery and get me one. My favorite back then, of course, was strawberry flavor. When I purchased my first auto, I would buy gas at Guille's Gas Station, which was also a big mechanic shop. This business was located within my own block to the west of our place. East of this gas station was Olga's Beauty Shop. One block west of the gas station was Don Canuto's Pool Hall and secret gambling room in the back where I would be banned by my "FATHER". Next to this was a pan dulce bakery. Across the street from my house on the southeast corner were several businesses as years went by on the same building. The most memorable was a motorcycle shop. The fellow who ran it was a Navy guy from the Kingsville Naval Base. He gave me a ride on his "giant" Harley Davidson once. I also witnessed many motorcyclists doing donuts on the south side of the shop. I helped him overhaul a car by giving him the tools he needed until late at night. He paid me five dollars. I was a rich man. Bishop Elementary School was located one city block south of our place with an alley in between. The school for blacks was located just behind the Catholic Church in the early years. All the above businesses were located within three blocks of our place. This is where The West Downtown Bishop was located. I was in the middle of it. I loved it, and I miss it!!!!!
