Julie's Story
I went to Del Mar College and then to Sam Houston State University and got a degree in Social Work. I became a member of the Baha'à Faith in college after having been raised a Methodist. I came to the Dominican Republic in 1974 as an exchange with the Bahaà Community here and stayed. I got some training and a job as an ESL teacher, living in Santo Domingo for the first year, then moved to the north coast to the town of Puerto Plata where, with some other people we started a school for teaching English.I got married in 76 to Mark Freehill who had come to the Dominican Republic for the same reasons as I did. n in 2007. Emily studied Industrial Engineering in the DR and then went to Madrid for a Masters in Sustainable Development. Jeremy, our son studied Business Admin in Santo Domingo and Urban Planning at UT in Arlington. He is now working with the United Nations in Santo Domingo.
So, after college I went to the Dominican Republic and got married and raised my kids there and still live here. My husband is a translator. We now live in the city of Bani. Our lives and those of our children have always been very much centered around the Baha'i Faith, a world religion founded in Persia in 1844. Its teachings are that there is only one God, that religion is one and that mankind is one. We follow the teachings of Baha''u'llah the Manifestation of God for this age.
