Julie's Story

Life I was born in Astoria, Oregon, but was raised and attended school in San Diego. I graduated from Hoover in 1963 and attended the University of San Diego, College for Women from 1963, to 1966, but did not graduate. I worked in a vending stand for twelve years and was involved in trying to get more Federal Buildings to put in vending stands so more blind and partially sighted people would have jobs. I met my future husband at Skyline Wesleyan Church in 1982. I was married on April 13, 1985. Neither of us had ever been married. I was forty and my husband was fifty when we were married. We are very much involved in volunteer work. In 2003, we attended three Reunions, two of my Husband's Fiftieth and my Fortheth. It was great to see so many of our old friends that we had not seen in years. I have been in contact with Patricia(Finan)Precourt for many years and we often would go up to Lancaster for a long weekend visit with her and her Husband and their Children. Two other Classmates attend the same Church that we attend and I often see them there. Their names are Arthur Rudolph and ELICIA(Jewell)Good. In 2004, we visited one of my Husband's Clasmates in Florida. In August of 2005, we moved to Mesa Arizona and we really love it here. Our medical insurance is so much better here than in San Diego and the prescription drug benefits are so much better than they were in San Diego that we are able to save some money. In order to pay off our debts, my husband, Carl went back to work. He is working for a Security firm as he did in San Diego, But is making more money so that we are able to pay off a lot of our debts as well as keep up with all of our other exspenses. This has truly been a blessing for us, since we feel more able to handle things better on a daily basis than before. School I attended Florence Elementary School from the Fall of 1950 to Spring of 1957. Florence was unique in the fact that the playgrounds were in four levels. One level was small, the second level was dow...Expand for more
n a small incline and fenced in, the third level could be reached by a flight of stairs, or down a ramp to the fourth level, then up a small incline to the third level. The third level was tarmacked, but the fourth level was all dirt with a fence, which I would often climb over, then climb up the hill to check out the trafic. After I checked the trafic, I would toss the ball back over the fence and then climb back into the playground. My class was small, since most of us were partially blind. Since we were partially blind, the teachers and the principals felt that we did not need to be watched, since we would not have the nerve to climb any tree, fence, or hill. I attended Roosevelt Junior High from the Fall of 1957 to Spring of 1960. My fondest memories was attending 8th Grade Camp. I also attended 6th Grade Camp when I was at Florence. I attended Hoover from the Fall of 1960 to Spring of 1963. I had so much fun helping Margo Kasch run for Homecoming Queen. My two favorite Teachers were Mr. Todd and Mr. Harris. I had Mr. Todd for Public Speaking and Mr. Harris for History during the summer for four hours and I really enjoyed taking four hours of History. I really learned a great deal from Mr. Harris. I also learned a great deal from Mr. Todd in Public Speaking. College I attended San Diego University, College for Women in the fall of 1963 to the Spring of 1966, but I did not Graduate. My two favorite Professors were Mr. Lippert and Mrs. Korina Shields. I had Mr. Lippert for Geography and Astronomy and Mrs. Shields for Anthropology and Sociology. I learned a great deal from them and also had so much fun in their Classes. Mr. Lippert had his Class watch a meteor shower, which took place at 4:00 in the morning and I really enjoyed watching the meteor shower and was glad that it was a clear night. One of Mrs. Shields assignments was for us to tape down our thumbs and try to eat and do household chores with the benefit of our thumbs and I found that this was very difficult to do.
