Julie's Story
Life
Original degree from FIU in Retail Management and a minor in Marketing, then spent 11 years in management with Federated Dept. Stores (Burdines, Jordan Marsh and Maas Brothers)
Married in 1984 and had son in 1986 who had many medical issues and discovered the world of Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) as a mom. Joshua died in 1989 and turned my life in a new direction entirely.
The marriage did not survive (which is the norm for parents with children with serious long term medical needs). But I discovered I was pretty good at that medical stuff and enjoyed it. So I left retail and went back to school. First I got a degree in Respiratory Therapy (this was a comfort zone choice since Josh as trached and vent dependent all his life). Then I expanded my world and got yet another degree in Nursing while I was working as a Resp Therapist at South Miami Ho...Expand for more
spital. I then joined their NICU as a staff nurse and stayed until April 2006.
I also married for a second time to a man who had two daughters (who I always called my "bonus kids" not stepkids). The youngest just graced us with our first grandchild in March 2006.
We just relocated to Tennessee in April 2006 for a better retirement community for us. (Hutch is a Miami native, but 4 hurricanes in 1 year, high taxes and even higher cost of insurance caused us to look for a change when he retired) I now work in the Level III NICU at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and would never want to work with any patients other than my babies.
But we still remain die-hard Miami Dolphin fans. Current daily activities still revolve around customizing the home we purchased to suit us, and are enjoying the beginning of Fall in the Smokie Mountains.
