June's Story
I've had a wonderful life. I've been married twice - the first time to Bill Schuster was short but we had two beautiful children, a son and a daughter, as a result. I remarried an Army Lieutenant, Steve Schmidt, 4 years later whom I met while working at ft. Monroe, VA who was not only 4 years younger than me, but was also my very best friend. We had 3 children together, a daughter born at ft. Monroe, where we lived when my husband went to Vietnam where he served with the 9th Infantry Division as Company Commander. Another daughter was born at Langley field,VA during the time when Steve was serving his second tour in Vietnam as an Advisor to the South Vietnamese.
Steve's return from his second tour in Vietnam was a happy occasion and since he had fallen in love with my first two children he wanted to adopt them before moving to our next assignment to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. The adoption was a breeze so we now have 4 children with the same last name which made life so much easier. za parties on weekends for the ROTC Cadets. It was an all male school during the time we were there. Since the Vietnam War was unpopular, we did have to develop thick skin in handling the negative feedback from some of the students as well as a few of the other professors. Steve still had to wear his uniform after all and there were very few active military families to be found in the area. Most of the people were welcoming and friendly - thank goodness!
I loved the military life and we spent many years moving from one place to another and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. My favorite place of all was our move to Germany. We had a son born in Heidleburg which was a beautiful place. Although everyone lived in government quarters - our location was perfect as we could see the beautiful Heidleburg Castle from our balcony on the 3D floor. My oldest son ran cross country and competed all over Germany so we took advantage and travelled all over Germany. After a year in Heidleburg, we next moved to Mannheim and spent 3 terrific years there before returning to the states.
