Kara's Story

Life I'm just going to keep this simple by sticking it all in one box. That's me now; efficient. Flash back to 1988: I graduated from CHS. Attended one year at RIC. I don't think I consumed anything other than pizza and beer for a year. Probably attended a dozen classes all year. The high school "good girl" needed a break. So, I went on leave from RIC, joined the circus... actually, I joined a travelling theatre group, and went around the country living in a tent for about a year and a half. It was very cool in many ways. And scary at times. Sad at others. Often cold. But, I went hiking and found ancient drawings in the rocks of the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. I watched the clouds move across the moon at the top of a mesa in Colorado. I helped build a black box theatre in Chicago. So much more. I missed home though and knew that it wasn't for me. I came back to RIC and got an apartment about a mile from the college. I majored in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, a program which got emliminated so I had to do the degree as a self-directed course of study. It was hard but interesting. I spent some time in France. Mostly because I realized I didn't want to really do that with my life. While I was at RIC, a roommate of mine got a back sprain. As an artist, I knew something about the human body, so I volunteered to do some massage to help out the healing process. It worked so well, he stopped taking meds and told me I should do it for real. I was so moved by that experience, that I checked out the field of muscular therapy. As I perused the advertising materials I thought, "Hmmm... you get to work with people one on one, it's medicinal, it's problem-solving, you can make your own hours... Sounds good!" So I left RIC in my last semester and went to MTI in Cambridge, MA. Two years later, I was a licensed muscular therapist. One of my teachers recommended me for a position as a chiropractic assistant. I stayed in that job for another two years learning about injuries and treatments. My own practice was growing simultaneous...Expand for more
ly and in 1998, I founded Bodycares. Through working with people, I learned how effective the manual therapies could be. I picked up several clients in the Boston Symphony, a few pro atheletes and a bunch of regulars from the Brookline area. We worked together to treat and prevent their injuries and various physical conditions. In 2004, I expanded Bodycares to be Bodycares Rehabilitation Therapies. I've hired and trained a yoga therapist and a physical reeducation specialist. We worked together as a team to treat clients who want to be actively involved in their own healing processes. In the long run, it did not work out - people started pulling the business in different directions so I fell back to a single person business where I'm much less stressed! I teach people how to move more efficiently, how to prevent injury and how to best come back from the complications of surguries, accidents, pregnancies, and poor postural habits. I married my best friend, Tom in 2007 and we've been living in domestic bliss ever since. When you find the right person, life is really, really great!!! To sum up, life so far has lived up to that old Chinese curse, "May you live an interesting life." There's a lot more to it of course. You've just read the abridged version. I did go back and finish my degree. I've still never done an illegal substance, am still introspective but no longer quiet, and I don't miss high school. Although I do miss a few of the students and teachers. Oh, I play a mean wadaiko. Curious? My plans for the future are to continue training my clients how to listen to their bodies until I am no longer needed to fix them, maybe someday discover a miracle treatment that will cure all pain and disease as we know it, and then retire to St. Croix... or Tokyo. I'm also working on the perfect chocolate chip cookie. But, I think I need more time and experimentation. Any suggestions? I hope your life is blessed and you are learning what you need to learn in this life. Be open to it or it'll keep coming back to haunt you until you listen!
