Karen's Story

Although I did not officially graduate from Crestmoor, I still consider Crestmoor's Class of 1971 to be my graduating class. It is from there that I still have wonderfully vivid memories of my closest friends. Moving to Colorado just weeks after the end of our junior year was one of the hardest things I have ever done. As a testament to Crestmoor, I generally had sufficient credits to graduate in Colorado without a senior year, except that they would not allow a 17 year old to graduate. So that final school year was quite a bore of study halls and independent studies. The result was a rather rebellious senior - yes quiet little Karen turned rebel with a cause. To counteract the boredom I sought out lots of wild adventures, the pinnacle of which was skydiving! Even when I initially enrolled in college I pursued courses in physical anthropology with dreams of going to Africa to dig up bones. But alas, the more sane version of Karen returned. I dropped out of college to marry and have 2 children. My sons are now 36 and 34. Although my marriage only lasted 8 years, I am proud to say that we achieved a very successful divorce. We jointly raised the kids and we continue to have a very supportive and friendly relationship - perfect for enjoying family events and our two grand-children. When the boys started school, boredom set in once again. I resurrected my business interests going back to my junior year. I returned to college this time at the University of Colorado School of Business. I graduated cum laude in 1981 with a BS in Accounting. I followed that up with taking the CPA exam, passing it on the first sitting. Now divorced, I worked in Public Accounting for 5 years. Then I decided I was more suited to private industry. I thought I was well on my way to a successful, long-life career in the homebuilding industry. But after a great 16 year run, the bubble burst and every decent job in homebuilding disappeared. As if having ...Expand for more
my career of over 20 years pulled out from under me wasn't challenging enough, in 2009 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery and seemingly endless weeks of daily radiation treatments did the trick, and I have been cancer free for two years now. Then a year after the cancer scare, I lost sensation in my legs due to an unstable spine. I had three vertabrae in my lower back fused together to make me whole again. My back hasn't felt this good since before I broke it 40 years ago. I recently started my own business, doing insurance reimbursement, patient billing, and other business services for medical practices. I work from my home where I've settled in Castle Rock, a town of about 40,000 located half way between Denver and Colorado Springs. I find it quite strange to be re-inventing myself at a time when I would much rather be planning my retirement. It's still too soon to tell how this adventure will go. I do love Colorado with its four seasons, the mountains, and distinctly slower pace to life. This big city girl has spent a lifetime easing into a quiet little country life. A few years ago I bought a 35 acre parcel of land not far from Breckenridge - my favorite little town and ski resort. If and when I do manage to retire, I hope to grow a small vegetable garden - a challenge at an elevation of 10,000 feet - and to add a couple of goats and lots of chickens to the cattle and pronghorn sheep already there. When not working, or watching movies or football games - all three have achieved addiction status - I love to travel. My travel highlights have been Italy twice and Israel, but San Francisco is still my favorite place to visit. Fortunately I still have family in California so I do get to visit occasionally. And yes I have driven by Crestmoor and other old haunts. It's funny how I have better memories of those good old days than I have of just last month! But, if you like to visit this website, perhaps you feel the same.
