Karen's Story

After our graduation from high school in 1973, I went to the University of Maryland, but left after 1 semester for various reasons. I then went to The Berkeley School in East Orange(secretarial sciences, they called my major then!) for a year. It was perfect for me. After that I got a job as an administrative assistant, which is what I've done for the past 30 years (in various places). I do like doing that --- I feel I'm perfectly suited to it. Several of my jobs were better than the others, and I spent most of my time at those companies where I absolutely loved my jobs, but it was also able to get a job easily when Milt and I moved around the eastern seacoast. Milt and I got married in October 1975. We started dating in between my junior and senior years at MHHS, and have been married for 34 years! Milt graduated from MHHS in 1970, and he knew my brother before he knew me (did sports together). Milt and I met at Rockaway Sales, when he and I both worked there. A year after we got married, we moved to Quincy, MA, and spent a year there for Milt's schooling (Eastern Nazarene College). Then we moved back to NJ (Lafayette, near Sparta and Newton, NJ) in 1977, and we had our first daughter Rachel in February 1979. We then bought a house in Warwick, NY, and spent a year there. Then we moved to Melbourne, Florida (for Milt's work) and lived there for 7-1/2 years. Although we absolutely loved the environment in Florida and made many good friends there, we wanted to come back to the Northeast (because of the less-than-wonderful educational system in Fla for Rachel, and because we missed our families and got tired of taking our vacations as 'obligations' to come home to NJ to visit). In ...Expand for more
1987 we moved again and bought a house in Amherst, New Hampshire when Milt got a job in his field (home building supply company management). In late 1988 we had our last child, a daughter Justine. I was lucky to have been able to stay home with both babies for one year. Here in NH I worked for several businesses (The Travelers Insurance was the first), but the place I loved the best was the second job I had in NH, which was at the Superintendent of Schools' Office in Amherst, NH, where I worked from 1993 to 2006. I was the Supt's Executive Assistant, and that office was a nice place to be because I got to know both of my kids' teachers quite well and could keep on top of Rachel and Justine's progress at school. The girls didn't always like that, but they also saw advantages to their mom having an 'inside track' to the schools. I was also involved in local politics, in a small way. In 2006 I decided to leave that job and spend a year focusing on Rachel's then-upcoming wedding, and preparing to sell our house, design and oversee (a little) building our new one in a different town in NH, and just 'being.' After that year off, I got a job as an administrative assistant at an engineering firm close to the town we now live in. Milt and I (and the girls) have had a chance to travel a bit over the past many years, too-- most recently after the kids got a bit older. Life is good --- not perfect but pretty darn good. I am so fortunate to have a healthy, happy and close-knit family, good friends near and far, and a wonderful husband with whom I have shared my life. Now that our children are grown, I have the opportunity to again connect with people from my past who meant a lot to me.
