Karen's Story

Life After I left Lincoln, I attended C.C.S.F. My class schedule was a total nightmare; decided to dropout and got a job at the infamous Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. I married Don Gomez (twin from Lincoln - Class of 66). We divorced 2 years later. Our daughter Gina Marie is 37 years old and is looking for a job in the medical field at this present time. I waited another 12 years and had another beautiful daughter named Natalie who is 22 years old and works as a Facility Coordinator at the GAP in San Bruno. I am blessed with a granddaughter Jacqueline who is 7 yrs old. My 2nd granddaughter was born on 11/02/05, and her name is Ofelia. God how time flies! I was very fortunate to work in the healthcare/biotech field after I left Metropolitan in 1970. I've had some great jobs along the way. I had the opportunity to move back home (43rd Avenue in the Sunset District) in November of 2000. My father was hospitalized and my mother was showing early stages of Alzheimer's. I was able to bond with my parents and recapture what I had lost; since I had left home 3 months after I graduated from highschool. My Dad passed away on Dec 27th, 2002. I truely lost the most important man in my life. Unfortunately, things change, as does our lives. I am single and enjoying it. I still have alot of living to do. Hope to travel to new horizon's in the year "2006". Workplace My 12 years at Berlex Biosciences was very ...Expand for more
rewarding. I won an award for "Most Distinguished Employee of the Year" in 1990 and 1997. Working for this company was a rewarding experience. I started out as a temporary receptionist for two weeks. I was hired permanently and was trained as a Quality Assurance Inspector. I later transferred to another department where I word-processed production documents for 8 years. The last 2 years with Berlex, I assisted with a double-blind research study for the drug "Betaseron" which is used for patients with multiple sclerosis. I learned alot about this disease. It gave me a wonderful feeling to know that these patients were surviving this dreaded disease and their MS was staying in remission. I was fortunate to be employed with a start-up company which was named "Codon Corp" which merged with Schering Inc in Germany. This company was very supportive of their employees. I unfortunately left this wonderful job because of an injury. If this injury hadn't occurred; I'd probably still be employed and be retiring with them. I am presently looking for work. It is very difficult to find work these days, and especially since 9-11. I've been working for the GAP at all their locations in San Francisco and San Bruno. I hope to land a permanent, full-time position sometime in the year 2006 (hopefully with full benefits). Most of my friends are taking early retirement, unfortunately... I have to return back to the work force.
