Karen's Story

I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. The closest I got was in 1985. When a Friend and I opened a Home Health Care Agency and got State Certified and Medicare approved. We were in competition with the County Home Health. It was my idea for I felt there was a need to have another agency, so the people would have there choice on who they would like to take care of them once discharged from hospital. I thought I had called the right friend to go into business with, but one word of advise is DON"T ever go into a business with a friend. A friend to me is someone that you are fond of and not hostile; amicable, supporting and helpful. I ended up having to have back surgery and was in bed for six weeks. She then took full advantage of me. I did end up with the business after she sold her shares to me. We lost our friendship over it! When I learned how to relax and blow off steam. Relaxing to me is laying down and letting my mind wonder to a beautiful warm place and only thinking about the place I'm at. I need to do it for at least a half hour then I can go back to what I was doing with a calm relaxed mind. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a good personality, sense of humor, and in joy people to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I have lived in Port Angeles all my live, except when my husband was in the Navy. We first moved to Oak Harbor and lived in housing for year and half then got transfered to San Diego for two years. It was fun down there. I worked as a waitress in a very popular chinese restaurant. I met some wonderful people that just worked there. We would go to Tijuana after work which we worked untill 10:00 or 11:00 pm. There could be up to ten of us going at one time. We would just walk accross the border. The name of the restaurant was the Teapot. The owner were the coolest I'...Expand for more
ve ever had. Mrs. Hum (owner) loved to stay young so she liked hanging out with us. She would have belly dancers come down once a month. Talk about the Navy guys coming in! Mrs. Hum was a dancer herself. I think this was the best time of my life. Late 70's and I guaduated 1970 so yeah it was the best time. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel bedroom and add on a walkin closet. My dream home would be 4 bdrms, 2 baths, dining rm, lg kitchen, and office. Outside triple car garage, fenced yard, hot tub that worked, green house, and beautiful landscaping.. I have two sons. They are five years a part. The oldest has given me three grandchildren and the youngest has given me one. He may have another some day. I have a total of four and they are all girls. The are all beautiful and love me as much as I love them. The oldest is going on 17 in March and the youngest just turned 8 in October. Then the one by my youngest son will be 16 in Feb.2010 and the other will be 10 in December so as you can see I have quit the range for grandchildren. I wish when I raised my sons it was as easy as having grandkids cuz they say yes, please or no thank you every time. Although my boys were pretty good about that too. They had great respect for me and still do. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to charity, then spend the rest on a new house, car and vacation. I would donate alot to the research of curing diabetes. My oldest granddaughter was diagnosed at age of 2 years old. She has alot of problems with it for she says shes different then her friends and hates it. She has to have at least 3 shots a day, more if she has snacks. Every time she eats she takes a shot for how many carbs she has eaten. It's so sad! I pray to God every day that he would help her learn that shes not different other then she has a diease and her friends don't, but her friends may have something else they don't even talk about.
